Are you a booster?
Hitch yourself in and help pull
for Jackson.
Let’s make this a banner year
for Jackson.
Do you talk Jackson when you
go away from home?
An abundance of Jackson spirit
is the thing most needed now.
Remember we need the audi
torium and the hotel and the trol
ley line.
This kind of weather reminds
one of the ninth inning with the
score tied.
We can land some big enter
prises be fore the year is out if
we pull for them.
Don’t try to leave your foot
prints on the sands of time but
cover them up with modern build
ings.
A number of those South Geor
gia towns have a lot of real fun
and pleasure out of the cow prob
lem.
We are not right sure but it
occurs to us we have never heard
of the speed limit being exceeded
in McDonough.
Monticello is pulling for a mon
ument. We knew she was a slow
one but never creamed any
thing like that.
Tom Hudson says a bumper
crop may be looked for. The pri
ces usually bump the wrong way
to suit the farmers.
Occasionally one hears that
somebody has been voted a pen
sion and then we remember that
congress is in session.
Just about the time the warb
ling wind and soothing sun kiss
the roses into bloom the weather
man will upset the picture.
It is a pity that Hobson can’t
direct his efforts towards trying
to discover the North Pole rather
than in, trying to stir up war with
Japan.
Don’t you really regret that
your great-great grandfather
wasn’t an admiral or that some
of your ancestors hadn’t fired the
first shot in some war so that
congress would vote you a pension
"Freak” George Glenn, who in
troduced th 2 bill to make it a
misdemeanor for women to lure
men into matrimony through de
ceptive means, has taken to the
lecture platform which means
that he will take to the woods
about the time some of the Carrie
.Nations line up behind him.
Jackson’s Opportunity.
4t is a matter of congratulation that a chamber of commeice
has been organized in Jackson, Such a step long un er coni em
plation was carried to a succsssful termination ues ay ni b
when a number of the progressive business arid pro essiona men
of the city gathered in the courthouse and gave orma an en
thusiastic expression in their belief in a Greater Jackson. is
a step upward, a pledge to carry Jackson s commercia supeimacy
to heights yet scarcely dreamed of.
Jackson is the queen city of this section, thebngies p
between Macon and Atlanta. Supported by the richest and most
fertile country in th’s part of the state, tilled with a set o usmess
men who know no superiors and certainly but few equa s, ei is
tory is destined to be writ large across the pages of the future, a
future rich almost beyond compare in possibilities for grow t an
development. In the past Jackson’s growth has been sure snd
steady. During the past two years a total of forty-five new an
modern residences and office buildings, at a cost of more t an on~
hundred thousand dollars, have been erected. This, too in the
face of adverse conditions. Just what will be accomplished now
that business conditions are fast becoming normal and with an or
ganization to safeguard her interest and push her claims and adver
tise her advantages the most optomistic can not tell.
Things are taking place around Jackson that make the people
of not only this section but the entire country take notice. Almost
at her very door the most expensive water power plant is in the
South is being constructed. The spending of three millions of
dollars, the harnessing of forces, the development of cheap
power, and all this taking place right at her door can not but make
Jackson enthusiastic and expectant. Some thing big in tne way
of new enterprises is as sure to result as night follows day. The
possibilities for interurban railways and mills and factories for this
county are greater than any place we know. It is but right and
proper that Jackson should have some organization to promote
her interests and work for the new enterprises that must naturally
result from the present development of cheap power.
The development of the South has only begun. It has not
been long since this part of the country was laid waste by the
ravages of fire and sword. Butts county suffered, perhaps, more
than her portion. She is just beginning to recover from the effects
of that evil day. The strides of the last few years have been
rnagnificient and marvelous but one half of he story of the South s
development has never been told.
More and more attention is being paid to the development of
natural resources. Forces that have for so long lain dormant and
idle are being utilited and made to serve a useful purpose. It
seems that this development has centered in and near Jacksou. The
first chapter in one of the most stupendous periods of the South’s
history is now being written. In the words of Dr. Lipscimb, we
believe “There is a Georgia greater than the Georgia have lost.
There is a Georgia grander than the Ceorgia that is. The Georgia
in our hills and our rivers will be the Georgia that will gladden the
hearts and homes of our children. Education has become a matter
of statemenship, every child taught,' every muscle skilled inact
ivity is but to arm them to go forth and recover that sovereignity
our maker blessed us with—the sovereignity of mind, and soul.
Give us this sovereignity and all else will spring. from this single
germ.”
There are a number of ways in which a chamber of commerce
can be of sprvice to Jackson. Butts county needs good roads, Jack
son needs a tourist hotel, a trolley line is needed. Other things
can be accomplished by a long hard pull. Great as has been the
growth in the past it will be insignificant to that of the future if
the business men of the city will give the movement the support
it deserves.
And a chamber of commerce can accomplish nothing without
the support and cooperation of the business interests. Jackson
needs to be advertised. The outside world ought to know of the
advantages this section possesses'. A broad and liberal policy will
bring in new capital and new industries will spring up. The city
will grow and take her rightful position among the leading commer
cial centers of the state if the right kind of encouragement is given
the chamber of commerce.
Let’s make this the best year in the history of the city. Let’s all
pull for Jackson and think of Jackson and talk Jackson. And
what is more let the bnsiness men of the city give the movement
the proper financial encourgement. Them all else will be easy.
Town and county. Jack-on and Butts county, their interests
are one and the same. What will do the county good will do Jack
son good. The Jackson Chambef of Commerce was organized with
the idea of benefiting both Jackson and Butts county. It is an
organization that should merit the support and approval of the
whole people.
There should be no misunderstanding on this point. Jackson
is supported by the agricultural interests around her. The farm
ers of Butts county are helped and benefited by the business and
banking interests of Jackson. Their interests are mutual.
In working and pulling for Jackson the chamber of commerce
is working and pulling for Butts county. There is a community of
interests that can not be overlooked.
Selfishness must have no part in the organization. Patriotism,
local and home pride, Jackson spirit, Butts county spirit, must be
the keynote of the Jackson Chamber of Commerce.
No, Pauline, the possum has
not been lifted into aristocracy
by his associations of the last few
weeks and he is the same night
prowling marsupial as of yore.
They are digging into old
mounds up around Elberton. In
Jackson it is considered much
nicer to break the dirt for mod
ern residence and office build
ings.
Augsta is in name and fact the
Deserted Village since Taft has
hied away to Panama. Smiling
Sanvannah has her revenge now
and is paying up the near-beer li
cense.
We see nothing else to it but
that Jackson will have to have a
modern tourist hotel with golf
links attached and get a part of
the notables coming South. The
climate is delightful.
