HIS CONVENTION
MET AT INDIAN SPRINGS
New Executive Committee
Was Elected
Hon. J. W. Wise was formally
nominated for congress from the
sixth district Wednesday at the
convention held at Indian Springs.
The convention was largely at
tended, many delegates being in
evidence from each of the twelve
counties in the district.
The sessions were held in the
assembly room of the Wigwam.
Mr. Wise was put in nomination
by Judge E. J. Reagan of Henry
county. Col. 0. M. Duke of Butts
county and others seconded the
nomination.
Mr. Wise accepted the nomina
tion in an address in which he

serve the district and to work for
the best interests of the nation.
His remarks criticising the cotton
plan of Senator Hoke Smith and

You Need a Tonic
There are times in every woman’s life when she
needs a tonic to help her over the hard places.
When that time comes to you, you know what tonic
to take —Cardui, the woman’s tonic. Cardui is com
posed of purely vegetable ingredients, which act
gently, yet surely, on the weakened womanly organs,
and helps build them back to strength and health.
It has benefited thousands and thousands of weak,
ailing women in its past half century of wonderful
success, and it will do the same for you.
You can’t make a mistake in taking
CARDUI
The Woman’s Tonic
Miss Amelia Wilson, R. F. D. No. 4, Alma, Ark.,
says: “I think Cardui is the greatest medicine on earth,
for women. Before I began to take Cardui, I was
so weak and nervous, and had such awful dizzy
spells and a poor appetite. Now I feel as well and
as strong as I ever did, and can eat most anything.”

CONFERENCE IN ATLANTA
War May last For Several
Months Yet
Atlanta, Ga., Aug. 24—The
Georgia Chamber of Commerce is
arranging to hold a big confer
ence in Atlanta in the early part
of October, which will be known
as the Southeastern Food Crops
Conference. The object of the
conference will be to secure the
growing of a larger amount
of foodstuffs, both for man and
animals, in the cotton producing
states of the southeast. At the
same time, the cotton states ly
ing west of the Mississippi will
be requested to hold a similar
conference in some suitably loca
ted city within easy reach of their
territory.
The plans, as outlined by the
state chamber, call for between
500 and 600 delegates. The Com
missioner of Agriculture in each
state will be requested to appoint
a delegate from each county in
his state with alternate delegates.
These men will be selected by
reason of their influence among
the farmers of their home counties
The importance of raising suf
ficient foodstuffs so that the
southeast will not have to import
anv next year will be earnestly
impressed upon the meeting.
Since the coming of the European
war, the entire South is getting
an object lesson on the foolish
ness of depending too much on
any one crop, no matter how
strong a crop that may be. It is
necessary that every county shall
grow at least enough to feed it
self next year. It is impossible
to say how long this war may
last. Earl Kitchener, the British
Minister of War, who is probably
the most reliable source of infor
mation, states that it will extend
over a period of eighteen months.
That will mean two crops for us.
It is imperative that the South be
absolutely independent of outside
sources of supply for next year.
Then, no matter what price cot
ton may bring, we shall be im
mune from the effects of high
prices for foodstuffs in other
parts of the world. The South
can do it. Before the Civil War
it was practically an unknown
thing for a southener to buy any
meats, grain or other staple foods
from anywhere outside the South.
The date for the conference
will probably be October 5 and 6.
