Although It was over ten years ago

OUR LESSON
What’s the use of kicking about the war in the East,
The time is shortly coming when the world’ll be at peace,
And a lesson for our Southland wiH’ve been taught,
When we shall be thankful for the battles they have fought.
This here thing of us poor devils a-raising all cotton
Is going to take a back seat and soon be forgotten;
For diversified farming is going to take its place—
A system that should be practiced by all the human race.
A little cotton for us Georgians is quite to my notion—
We’ve got to have it here, and some across the ocean.
But let this be a surplus after raising all the food we can.
With a crib full of corn and some biscuits in the pan.
Let chickens, hogs and cattle be browsing in the dell—
A plenty for the family and many left to sell;
tireen clovers in the winter, a pleasure to the eye.
With wheat and oats a-growing and then a patch of rye
Cut out all the lux’ries which you can’t afford just now,
Convert your car into a tractor and hitch it to a plough.
The times, you know, are mighty fast and folks are living
high;
It’s time to halt the engine and quit trying to fly.
When the boll weevil arrives from our neighbors on the west,
There will be nought for the gentleman to bother or infest;
We’ve been thru the rub already for the war to the Right
Has beat ’em to the goal, and restored to us our sight.
The Heavenly Master may allow all this, who knows but
what ’tis true?
It takes some pretty hard jolting to bring some sinners thru.
Blame not too much the kaiser, we may have him to thank
When there’s plenty in the larger, and money in the bank.
