MR. WORSHAM TELLS OF
BURR CLOVER AND ALFALFA
These two legumes which have
been demonstrated to thrive so
well on Butts county soil are
somewhat akin in their nature
that they inoculate for each
other. Alfalfa will thrive on a
spot where burr clover is grow
ing because the soil is already
inoculated and replenished with
humus and nitrogen. Burr clover
is indigenous to our soil and
needs no nursing. I fail to un
derstand whv it does not receive
the good will of every one who
desires to be benefited by moth
er nature. To compare it with
bermuda as a menace is like com
paring sugar with salt; they are
entirely different. If bermuda
is considered a pest it continues
to be until by wintry ploughing
and frequent harrowing or cul
tivated with those crops which
shade it to death, it is finally
eradicated. Bur clover is a clov
er and not a grass. It furnishes
winter grazing for hogs and cat
tle and has the power to draw an
abundance of costly nitrogen out
of the air by means of the bac-

Which is wiser—to have confidence
in the opinions of your fellow-citizens,
of people you know, or depend on
statements made by utter strangers
residing in far away places? Read the
following:
Mrs. Gordon Carmichael, Oak St.,
Jackson, says: “Kidney trouble caused
me a lot of suffering. I had pains all
through the small of my back and
loins, especially severe in the morning.
The kidney secretions were also un
uatural. 1 knew I needed a kidney
medicine but didn’t know what to
take until a friend advised me to try
Doan’s Kidney Pills. They cured me
of kidney trouble and I have had no
return of it since.”

out of the way along about the

Those who do not care to wait

narrow baulk in the middle to
furnish seed for next season and
go ahead with as early planting
as is desired, and even this is on
ly necesary every second year.
Bur clover seed have been known
to germinate after lying dormant
under the ground for 5 years.
If you do not use the seed of
that patch which is growing so
luxuriantly around your home I
shall Pe glad to have the oppor
tunity of notifying others who
are more appreciative of this
wonderful gift of Providence.
A farmer in South Carolina had
30 acres of bur clover whose seed
brought S3OOO last year. It cost
him about 20c.per bushel to have
them gathered.
Let us establish some perma
nent hog pastures with burmuda,
bur clover and maybe a small
quantity of white clover. When
one is not growing the other is
thriving. Bermuda is always
better when used in connection
with with this clover, and one
does not kill out the other, as
they grow at different seasons of
the year.
Is your alfalfa ready to cut?
Get down upon your knees, make
a close examination of the new
shoots which come from the base
of the plant, and when about an
inch high, cut then and there. It
also begins to bloom at this time.
Very respectfully,
H. L. Worsham,
County Extension Agent.

FIRES A MENAGE TO THE
FORESTS
For some weeks past, except
when it has been raining, there
has been a haze in the air due to
smoke. Almost every night there
has been a glow against the sky,
first in one direction then in an
other.
Some of these fires were set
for a good purpose and were kept
under control; but many of them
served no purpose and were al
lowed to run without control.
The chief motive for setting fires
at this season is the preparation
of land for cultivation. Asa

Most of our soils need humus;

Fires that are set in the field
often get away and run for days
through the woods. When a fire
runs through the woods it almost
always does harm. The damage
is rarely less than one dollar an
acre; it is often as much as four
dollars an acre. It burns the
leaves and litter and this re
duces the power of soil to retain
moisture. It injures the large
trees. It kills the seedlings, and
you cannot keep a forest going
without seedlings any more than
you can keep a community going
without children.
Since its founding, eight years
ago, this association has advoca
ted a system of forest fire laws
for this state and has encouraged
a sentiment against the careless
handling of any fire whether in
the woods or fields. This bulle
tin is sent out at this time when
fires are rampant, to call atten
tion to the great waste which
they involve.
