BUILD ROADS
SAYS ANDERSON
TO SELECT ROUTE LATER
Will Give Counties Time
to Get Ready
Mony delegptions came to Ma
con yesterday to see W. T. An
derson, of the Dixie highway
commissioners. Mr. Anderson
furnished the following for pub
lication:
“There is a disposition on the
part of some of the commission
ers from other states to decide
the route of the highway on May
20, at the Chattanooga meeting.
However, Mr. Howell and I are
fully ageed that so far as Georgia
is concerned, the route of the
Dixie highway through this state
will not be determined until the
contesting counties have had suf
ficient time in which to put their
roads in order. It is extremely
pleasing to hear the road com
missioners promise good roads
through their counties, but I
have given my promise to ride
over every route proposed and to
make my choice on the merit of
the road. I cannot ride on prom
ises—only roads can be consider
ed. So, I hope every county and
town and citizen interested will
take this as highway law, and be
governed accordingly.
It was promised ir\ the outset
that no snap judgment should be
taken. That still holds good. It
is impossible to select a route up
on the promises that may be
made as to how good that route
will be. If that were the basis,
it would be merely a matter of
the spokesman who could out
promise anybody else. Roads are
what we want. We are going to
grant reasonable time in which
to build them, and when they
are ready personal inspection
will be made and the route selec
ted accordingly. The other states
may go and name their route, if
they deem it expedient, but Geor
gia is to be held open to give ev
erybody a chance.”—Sunday’s
