Belief In Witchcraft.
Ludicrous os the powers appear to us
at the present day with which witchcraft
iu former times was credited, such pow
ers seem never to have been denied or
disputed by the great minds of the past.
A witch was all that was abominable,
and to be held in the strongest loathing;
yet few had the wisdom or the courage
to contradict the possibility of her exer
cising tho arts she pretended to. The
Judge, as he passed sentence on the
condemned woman, trembled lest her fell
gaze should bring upon him and his
household sorrow' or death. The yelling
crowd, as it half stripped her to undergo
tho water-ordeal, shuddered as it saw
upon her exposed bosom the marks
which, it was supposed, proved that she
allowed lieNV ‘familiar” to draw upon her
life’s blood. The villagers who went
miles out of their way to avoid her
haunts, never for one moment believed
that the object of their fear was power
less to work them evil, and was either a
half-mad woman, the victim of a hideous
delusion, or else the actress of a knavish
part to serve her own vile ends. To all
tho old crone, with her tall hat, crutch
stick, and black cat nestling on her
shoulders, was one who had dealings
with the devil, and who, through the
might of Satanic aid, could scatter the
seeds of misery broadcast "wherever she
listed. She had sold herself to hell,
and, until death claimed her, her power
to effect evil, it was alleged, was unlim
ited. The great man is he who rises
superior to the prejudices of his age; but
bofore the end of the seventeenth
century—with the exception of Bodin,
Erastus, Regia aid Scot, John Wagstaffe,
and Dr. Webster—there were none who
had the boldness or knowledge to brand
witchcraft as a base and palpable super
stition. We find Lord Bacon gravely
proscribing “henbane, hemlock, man
drako, moonsliade, tobacco, opium, and
other soporiferous medicines” as the best
ingredients for a witch’s ointment. Prom
the pages of his “History of the World,”
w’o see that the gifted and practical Sir
Walter Raleigh was a firm believer in
this childish form of superstition. The
learned Selden, in his “Table Taik,”
while pleasantly discoursing on the sub
ject of witches, show's that he also held
the same faith. Sir Thomas Browne,
the kindliest of physicians; Sir Matthew'
Hale, the most acute and spotless of
Judges; Hobbies, the skeptic; “the em
inent Dr. More, of Cambridge,” and the
patient and thoughtful Boyle, all were
of opinion that witchcraft w r as an evil
capable of solid proof, and that its dis
ciples merited sharp and quick punish
ment.
It was not until tlie dawn of the
eighteenth century that men came to
the conclusion that the devices of
“witches and witch-mongers” were only
so many tricks and fables, and utterly
unworthy of credence. The last judicial
execution in England took place in the
year 1710, when a woman and her little
daughter were hanged at Huntingdon
“for selling their souls to Satan.” Since
that date, however, various cases have
occurred of women, accused ps witches,
being drowned while undergoing the
ordeal by water at the hands of their in
timidated, yet infuriated neighbors.—

Curious Works of Ants.
Ants are constructed wfththe “back”
bone in front, and the heart and other
internal organs on the opposite side are
put together upside dowm, as we might
think. Their mouth is for biting and
swallowing food only, not for breathing.
Their bite is so determined and lasting
that they are used in some countries
for confining the edges of wounds and
cuts. Ants’ heads are presented to the
cut surface, which they grasp with the
nippers, when their bodies are cut off,
leaving a whole row of them to hold the
flesh. They are cheaper than sticking
plaster in some countries.
As an illustration of their ingenuity
and intelligence, it was stated that they
sometimes excavate tunnels under rivers
of considerable depth and width, and
use the tunnels for transporting sup
plies. They dig wells twenty feet deep
and a foot in diameter for drinking
water. The harvesting ants plant seeds
on farms, which they cultivate with
great care and neatness, keeping every
weed down and harvesting the grain,
curing and storing it safely in weather
proof cavities in the soil. They also
organize into divisions with commanders,
each individual doing a certain kind of
work. Some ants are smart enough for
engineers, while others only know
enough to do as they are told. They
can count and make correct estimates of
the magnitude of an undertaking, as
proved by observers.
Eight chrysolides (often called the
eggs of ants) were placed in a path
where ants travel. A single individual
found them and undertook to remove
them to their home. Several were car
ried by the single ant patiently enough,
but when twenty chrysolides were
placed in the heap, another ant was
„ found engaged in the work. The pile
w as increased at intervals till eighty ants
engaged in the undertaking, showing
that the workers were detailed accord
ing to the demands of the cases. Ants’
battles sometimes last many days, in
one case seven weeks, the victors finally
taking the stores and removing' them to
their own houses. * Their wars ae
quite as justifiable as those of men,
when the object—pillage—is the same.
They have the power, too, of knowing
members of their own communities
even after six-months’ absence. Stran
gers are always driven off or killed.
They are very helpful to each other, and
show sympathy in case of accident or
sickness. Some families of ants build
arched roads covered by an arch of clay
or mortar for protection against ene
mies, and show great skill in the work,
which is under the supervision of trained
engineers, who order rebuilding if the
work is not perfect. Some kinds of ants
keep cows, build cow-yards, and milk
their cows regularly, and don’t throw
milking-stools at them either to make
them “ give down,” but stroke and
pat their backs very tenderly. Of
course these cows are the plant aphides
so familiar to farmers and gardeners.—

The St. Louis (Mo.) Post-Dispatch , at
the close of a long article, says : In fact,
St. Jacobs Oil is pushing all other reme
dies out of the field, and, excellent
though some of the liniments, formerly
offered are, the efficacy of St. Jacobs Oil
is magical in cases of sciatica, rheu
matism, pleurisy, neuralgia, nervous
headache, lwnbago, and scores of other
disorders ; while in the case of sprains,
burns, or injuries it is an absolute pana
cea, and for general use is better than
the advice of many physicians. “A
word to the wise is sufficient.”

Well Indorsed by Our Own Citizens.
No matter how useful anything may
be in itself, good indorsements seem to
increase its usefulness greatly by insur
ing a wider field for the display of its
special merits. We were thus impressed
in view of the following statements re
ceived by one of our representatives from
the leading individuals connected with
some of the largest “enterprises in our
midst. Among others whose testimony
was freely given was W. H. Stearns,
Esq., Master Mechanic of the Conn.
River Railroad, residing at No. 28 Boyl
ston street, who observed :—St. Jacobs
Oil lias had remarkable effect among the
men employed here. One of them jammed
his arm very badly, and by the use of
St. Jacobs Oil was greatly benefitted, and
the arm was healed. Another used it for
severe rheumatic pains in the knee, and
pronounced the Oil a complete success as
he was cured by its use. Mr. A. B. Taylor,
of the “Ray & Taylor Manufacturing Cos. ”
was pleased to say: “My aunt, Mrs.
Pillsbury, of Mount Clair, N. J., while
visiting at our house tried St. Jacobs
Oil for rheumatism and neuralgia, and
found immediate relief every time. She
pronounced it the best thing she had
ever tried for the trouble. Mr. J. B.
Weston, 45 Greenwood street, Supt. Car
Works, Boston & Albany Railroad, thus
addressed our reporter: “lam one more
of the fortunates who have had the good
luck to hear of that wonderful remedy,
St. Jacobs Oil. I had rheumatism in

relief until I used the Oil. I applied it

results. lam almost well and expect to

WEATHER—OR NOT.
We admire the philosophy oi the unfortunate
man, who, when everything had been swept
away, said, “ Well, there’ll be weather and taxes
left, at any rate.” Alas ! weather is the “yellow
dog” of all subjects; everyone thinks it his
special right to try to better the weather, and
hurls his anathemas against “Old Probabilities,”
and all who endeavor to assist him In regulating
the weather. The following communication is
from Prof. Tice, of St. Louis, Mo., the renowned
meteorologist and weather prophet of the West.
It does not discuss the weather but something
surely of more importance to those who suffer
with that painful malady he speaks of: “The
day after concluding my lectures at Burlington,
lowa, on the 21st of December last, I was seized
with a sudden attack of neuralgia in llic chest
giving me excruciating pain and almost prevent
uig breathing. My pulse, usually 80. fell to 25,
intense nausea of the stomach succeeded, and a
cold, clammy sweat covered my entire body.
The attending physician could do nothing to re
lieve me. After suffering for three hours, I
thought— as I had been using St. Jacobs Oil with
good effect for rheumatic pains—I would try it.
I saturated a piece of flannel, large enough to
cover my chest, with the Oil, and appliedit. The
relief was almost instantaneous. In one hour I
was entirely free from pain, and would have
taken the train to fill an appointment that night
iiva neighboring town had my friends not dis
suaded me. As it was, I took the nifht train foi my
home, in St. Louis, and have not been trouble
since.

Mandrake Pills,
When taken as directed, will cleanse the whole system,
restore the appetite, make the food digest easily and
cause it to make new and healthy blood. In this way
ihe system is put in a condition that renders it possible
for the lungs to heal in Consumption, and in no other
way can this disease be cured.
Before anything can be done towards a cuie the stom
ach mud bowels must be cleansed, so that the food that is
taken will digest and make healthy blood. Emaciation
or loss of flesh in Consumption, is alway* caused by a
lack of nourishment, and nourishment can only come
from well digested food. To attempt to stop a cough
when the lungs ara diseased is always dangerous.
To try to stop night sweats without building up the
general system by well digested food is useless, and in
many cases the medicines given to relieve these symp
toms are the cause of death.
CONSUMPTION
Is inherited, or it may be brought on by Dyspepsia or a

MANDRAKE PILLS
Do not produce sickness at the stotnach, nausea or grip
ing. On tnecontraiy, they are so mild and agreeable in
their action that a person suffering with a sick headache,
tour stomach or pain in the bowels, is speedily relieved
f these distressing symptoms. They act directly on
the liver, the organ which, when in a healthy condition,
purifies the blood for the whole body.
They are a perfect preparation of that great and wall
known remedy, Mandrake or Todophyllin, a remedy
that has displaced the tue of mercury, as well as many
other poisonous drugs, in the practice of every intelligent
physician.
Prof. John King, of the College of Medicine, of Cincin
nati, says: “In Constipation it acts upon the bowels
without disposing them to subsequent costiveness. In
Chronic Liver Complaint there is not its equal in the
whole range of medicines, being vastly more useful than
mercurial agents, arousing the liver to healthy action,
increasing the flow of bile, and keeping up these actions
longer than any other agent with which we are ac
quainted.” (See American Dispensatory, page 720.) _
In all cases of Liver Complaint or Dyspepsia, when
there is great weakness or debility, Dr. Sclienck’s
Seaweed Tonic should be used in connection with
these Pills.

Dear Sir: In the autumn of 1877 I had a severe cough,
with terrible pain in my sides and between my shoulders.
I had very little appetite, and what little I could eat only
distressed me. I consulted who said my con
. ditioti was a very bad one and gave me nve different "cougb
syrups and tonics, from which I received no benefit, but
seemed to grow worse and kept losing flesh and
strength. I had night sweats, and sweat most of the time
during the day. I coughed and raised blood and a salt,
foamy phlegm ; my throat was filled with ulcers, I could
.hardly swallow; sometimes I could not speak a loud
word for weeks ; my lungs grew more painful every day
with difficult breathing, while pleurisy pains would
almost stop my breath. I had colic pains, sour stomach
and vomiting up everything I ate. My whole body was
filled with pain. I could notTlie down, but had to recline
in a sitting posture to breathe.
I gave up and did not think of ever getting up again, as
it was hard moving myself; my feet and ankles began to
swell badly, and my hips had given out long before.
In this sinking condition, I thought I would try your
remedy for consumption : it might rlo me some good ; it
could do me no Harm, for I was certain I could not live a
month longer the way I was.
At that time, May, 1878, I procured your Pulmonic
Syrup, Seaweed Tonic and Fills, and took them as di
rected. In a week I was better and began to throw off
from tlie lungs a greenish yellow matter streaked with
blood.
I could eat a little without throwing it up, the pains in
my sides were not so severe, I could sleep an hour very
soundly, and that was what I had not done for three
months.
I took your medicines steadily six months, my couglx
got better’, I did not sweat so bad" at nights, kept gaining
slowly, and in a year alter I began your medicines I could
say I felt well.
I began to gain flesh, and last September weighed one
hundred and thirty-five pounds, fifteen pounds more
than I ever weighed before m my life.
Your medicines, I know, saved my life; and I would
say, from my own experience, to all consumptives, take
Dr. Schenck’s medicines, for they will certainly cure
you.
I had Consumption, it is hereditary in our family, my
father and two brothers having died of it.
I have had better health the past winter than for ten
years previous. Yours Respectful! v,
MRS. SARAH A. CARTER.

CONSUMPTION CAN* BE CURED!
Dr. J. 11. ScnKscK: *
Dear Sir: About sixteen years ago, while living in
Canada, my health became very poor. My disease came
on gradually, beginning with a ioss of appetite and after
wards great weakness, which brought on night sweats
and a dry, hacking cough. My chest and back were very
weak, and so sore that I could not bear my weight
against the back of a chair. At different times I raised
considerable blood, which my physician said came from
the lungs. I employed several doctors, but they all told
me the same thing—that my lungs were badly affected ;
and the last one that I had also said that I could live but
a short time, and that I had better go to my mother’s
home in Winstead, Ct., as soon as I could, that with
careful nursing I might live for some time. When I got
to my mother’s I was very low indeed, so that my
mother sent for her doctor. He pronounced me beyond
all help. He, however, left me some medicine which he
said would relieve inv worst symptoms. After this, my
mother employed another doctor, who said that one ol
my lungs was nearly gone. I ate scarcely anything for
several months, and never expected to get well. One
day, a friend who lives in Collinsville, Ct., gave my
father one of your pamphlets on Consumption. He
brought it home and told me to look over it and see if any
of the cases described in it were like mine. I read the
book through, and found so many cases described there
that seemed as bad as mine, that were cured, that I
began to hope that I too might recover by using the med
icines. My fuller, finding’ that they were not kept in
Winstead, sent to New York and got a supply. In one
week after I began their use, my night sweats ceased,,
and my appetite began to improve. In two weeks after
this I was much better in every wav; I commenced to
use the medicines in March; in July 1 felt quite strong:
in two months more 1 was well, and I have had good
health ever since. I believe that I would not be alive
to-day but for the use of your medicines, and all the
doctors I had said bit disease was Consumption, and that
I was incurable. tours Truly,

Dear Sir: Seeing one of your agents distributing your
books in this village a few days ago, has reminded me of
the past, and has made me feel that I ought to acknowl
edge with gratitude the benefit I once received from your
medicines.
I was a soldier in tlie army from 1862 to 1865. and when
mustered out was in a crippled state, having had during
my service, scurvy and camp fever, which, with the ma
laria of the swamps in which much of our operations were
carried on, left me diseased all over.^ I was soon attacked
with cnronic diarrhoea arnica constant, hacking cough.
My whole nervous system was completely prostrated. I
was apparently fast approaching the grave. In looking
aver the newspapers to find something advertised that
wmmm
HENTLEMEN: I have used Du. Harter’s Iron Tonic in uiy practice, and In an experience o
" twenty-five years in medicine, have never found anything to give the results that Dk. Habteh s
Iron Tonic does. In many cases of Nervous Prostration, Female Diseases, Dyspepsia, and an im
poverished condition of the blood, this peerless remedy, has in my hands, made some wonderful cures.
Cases that have baffled some of our mbst eminent physicians, have yielded to this great and Incompar
able remedy. I prescribe it in preference to any Iron preparation made. In fact, such a compounu
as Db. Harter’S Iron Tonic is a necessity In my practice. Db. ROBERT feAML ELS,
