\fe hafre had a Cne rain, which
was very jmich needed.
TheGtttnd of corn is generally
had, on account of not being moist
ure enough in the ground 10
it up.
We are hopeful of a good grain
crop, as the rain came in the nick
of time to save in. A few tn >re
rains will be sufficient to secure a
prood yield, provided n disaster
befalls it.
Jt was our good pleasure to spend
a few hours with our 1 i end
Hr. J- M. C. Thaxion by an invita
tion home with him from church ;
and a*ter partaking of u sumptuous
repast prepared by the hands of
his good wife and accomplished
daughters, we took a etroil into the
garden. And wo were made in
thiwk that if C. R. Carter did not
mend his licks, and that fast, he
will be left on the finest garden in
the district. Everything around
Mr, Thaxton’s place shows thrift,
energy and neatness.
We then repaired to the Agricul
tural Club; and there we met Mr.
of Locust Grove, who came
out to have his guano notes prop
erly signed up. After the notes
>vere signed the meeting was called
to order by J. F. I’etigrew, the vice
president of the club. some of the
members complimented Mr, Shell
in a short speech on causing the
jgreat tumble in high prices on gu
ano, apd considered him the man
tv ho struck the blow. Mr. Shell
responded in a few remarks, and
•aid the guano that the club had
bought was firstclass, and as good
as any that had been, shipped to
fhe State of Georgia. Our club has
simply knocked the wind out of
high prices. The one horse farm*
era #nd land renters that belong to
our club have bought guano ns
cheap as the big farmers of the
country, and we don't cars bow
many plows they run we have
bought it as cheap as they have.
We-are aware of the fact that il
takes nerve as well as brains to
farm successfully. The object of
pur club is to meet and discuss tin*
propriety of both, and how to ap
ply it. We have been cognizant
of the fact that there has been a
big diferimir ation between the
fapitaliijt and the laboring classes.
Please understand me and don’t
misconstrue what I lmve to say on
ibid subject. We know verv well
that we are on delicate grounds.
We have the utmost contempt for
that element that is always grumb
ling because somebody else is rich
and they are poo-, and the leaders
of those so-called Knights of La
bor and labor strikers who are not
worth the powder and lead it would
Jake to kill them. I say that such
an element never brings any good,
but always breeds mischief. But
the point we wish to get at is this •
the manufacturer and trader is pro
tected in almost everything th v
manufacture and handle by a pro
teetive tariff, while we are protected
in nothing we produce or sell The
manufacturer or merchant can
take a SI,OOO bond, which is ex
empt from taxation, and borrow to
the amount of its full lace value at
four per cent, interest, and operate
on it by manufacturing and selling
nn article to larmers that has twen
ty per cent. protection, while the
farmer is forced to buy on tin e by
t ‘aeon of the bmdensome tariff and
high taxes, and if the f rmer bor
rows money at all, if he has a SI,OOO
farm be can only Borrow a small
amount on the same, and it bur*
# led with interest that will place
Ins family and his land in jeopardy.
Hence you see there is room for the
fanners to organize and see if there
if any for their questions
The farming interest is too grand
and its foundation too noble t.-
mitagonifce manufacture or com
mercial institution?. Our object 1-
jwt to {rail down, but to build up
f.verv industry. When farmer?

DAHLONEGA .
Ed. Argus: —Some weeks ago
you published a short article Com
me, and I take this opportunity of
correcting some mistakes made by
myself.
The drill will take place on May,
10, 11, next. Company 13. alone
will participate in the drill. Our
commandant, Maj. W. C. Rafferty,
h is made all necessary arrangments
concurring toe trip. The company
and its friends will have a special
car from Gainesville to Macon and
return, leaving Dahlonega on the
9 ill.
In addition to the above facts 1
would state that under the skillful
supervision of our worthy captain,
J. Chas. Woodward, of your own
county, the company is progressing
finely and will doubtless make a
tjood display at Macon. The
( o npany will number eighteen—
sixteen privates and two guides.
I will state thru as we got cheaper
rates on the Central than we could
have obtained on the E. T. V. & G
R. R , we will make our trip on the
Central. As Capt. Woodward
knows what to do when he takev
hold of h military company, I think
oar company will be successful on
the trip. All are invited to attend
Very respect fully,
Cadet H. B. Carmichael.
Nutmegs.
Down in the cellar of a Water
street ware-house a man was shovel
ing nutmegs into a •coarse sieve and
raitleiug away like a frugal house
keeper with an ash sifter.
“What’s the matter with them?'
Ventured the Evening Sun-beam.
“Nothing, 5 ’ answered the perfor
mer. “Don’t you see I’m grading
them.”
“Won’t the grocer charge more for
a big nutmeg ihau for a little one ? ’
“VVell, right here in these boxes
the nuts arc just as they came from
Singapore and Batavia. Tbev are
wlmt the trade calls, HO*,’ that is,
110 nuts to the pound, and that is the
wav this firm bought ’em ; but as a
matter of fact 110 s average better
than lh*>t, and it pays us to pipk out
thq big ones and sell them separately
—see? The largest nuts run about 70'
to the pound, but there are some
feather weights that go 10 to the
ounce.”
“Vv hat makes them look so white.”
‘‘Lime. It was shaken over them
when they Were packed for shipment
It keeps them fresh, and it weighs
something too. When you buy nut*
megs Jm the east each one of these
boxes goes for a half picul. But the
New York jobber takes very little
for gianted when he puts his money
into merchandise that has sailed as
tar as these nuts have. Every box
of them has got to be weighed on
the Yankee beam, and on the free
dom’s own soil, too; and, what is
more, ten per cent of every parcel
must ho tared before the Jobber lets
go of his silver dollars. Foreign
weights must be naturalized, like the
foreigner himself, before we take
much stock in them.
“Nutmegs that average 110 to the
pound* cost about half a cent apiece,
but before they get to the snowy head
of a milk punch, or into the ii ner
richness of a rice pudding, they cost
the consumer two or three cents each.
Formerly Singapore used to have the
lead on Batavia tor nutmegs, but now
honors are easy. Nutmeg immi
grants from tin- latter port usually
called the Dutch paternal home in
Rottenldam and then take steamer
hence; hot the Singapore variety,
true to natural instinct, generally
drops in at I.notion to see the old
folks before winding up at the foot
of Hudson street, New York. The
direct steamers ail berth utt the East
River side, and discharge tUeir cargo
of aromatic exiles amid the faden
glones of Cherrv Hill.*
“Lots of pretty girls wear a nut
meg round their necks as a charm
against sickness. It is to them lik> j
t scapular to the pious or the face of
he beloved to the love-lorn maid. >
