over the head with it knocking
him senseless to the ground. Jones
quickly ran off to his quarters hot

News reached Jug Tavern Satur
day night that a man was found
hanging in the house used for
holding courtun Ben Smith’s dis
trict in Gwinnett county. The coro
ner was summoned and an inquest
held, but no evidence of identity
could be found on the person of dm
young man. He was found by
some boys who were playing around
the house and no one could give
any account of him, except that
he stayed last Monday night with :t
negro on the road irotn Tavern
to Lawrenceville, and early next
morning he stopped at the well of
Wylie Pearce to get a drink of wa~
ter. Mr. Pearce, seeing hifn at the
well, asked him to drive soMe hogs
out af the yard, which he did, and
passed on without a word. About
9 o’clock he was sten by Troup
Patrick s daughter, standing in
front of the court house, a small
wooden building near Mr. Patrick’s
house, and very near the road. —
Two days later he was seen hang
ing by a suspender and a leather
strap f'om a joist above, vvitn his
arms stretched out, his lace near the
wall and hat lying under him. It
was evidently a case of suicide. He
is described as being a young man,
low in statrue, heavily set, and
strong Irish features, mustache,
scars on tw;o fiugers ol the left hand
as if made by a knife a lung time
ago. His dress was neat, with new
shoes and suspenders on. In hit
pockets were found 10c. in silver
and a blank memorandum with no
words or figures to show anything
