BADLY SHOT NEGRO.
Ira Taylor is lying in jail in a badly
wounded condition. On Friday Mr.
Frank Greer, acting bailiff, was put in
the posession of a warrant lor the ar
rest of Taylor for stealing. He sum
moned a posse ‘ttud went to Taylor's
house and found him eating break
fast. He demanded the negro's sur
render but instead he grabbed a gun
showed fight equal to a western des
perado, and Mr. Greer bad to shoot
him down before he was conquered.
He was shot through tne body and
through the face and is now lying in
jail suffering from his wounds.
WATSON’S WORK.
Tom Watson, seeing that he is a
“statesman out of a job” has fallen
upon the idea ot making speeches all
over the land with the view of mak
ing money out of his paper. He has
lost his law practice, 6old his library
aud can’t go back to congress, and is
now making the biggest canvass ever
known in Georgia for a paper. When
he speaks in this county you will see
his agents industrially working the
crowds and pocketing the dollars by
the score. That’s what Tom is after,
its’ the almighty dollar. He does’nt
think any more of the dear people
than we do.
WE WORK FOR GLORY.
Bat few people ever know, or
stop to think of how much work a
newspaper necessarily has to do f® r
nothing. The Argus, scarcely
prints an issue but that from one
to more dollars’ worth of free work
is done. We are called upon to
give notice ol all political, agricul
tural, Alliance, literary, school,and
religious meetings, and to print
memoriams, tributes of respect and
■i hundred an 1 oi e other
notices for which we never get a
cet.t of pay. These things, to the
average reader, may not seem to
amount to hut little, hut in the iun
of a year oi ten years will assume
great proportions,besides frequently
we are forced to discard other mat
of a paying nature in order to insert
room. While this work sometimes
seems a little burdensome we could
do it more cheerfully ir the people
would properly appreciate it, but a
paper is looked upon a kind of pub
lie servant that lives on wind and is
always ready to work for nothing.
There is no less than five dollars of
this free work in this one but
all we ask is good will and prompt
payments by our subscribers.
TRIBUTE OF RESPECT.
Whereas, it pleased our Heavenly
Father to allow affliction and death
to come amongst us and take from
our midst our much beloved friend
and sister, Mrs. E. G. Gilmore,
therefore.
Resolvedj Ist, That in her de
parture we bow in meek submission
to the will of Him who doeth right
in all things.
2nd, That in her death we have
lost from our Society and church
one whom we all dearly loved.
->rd That while we feel a deep
and abiding loss in our own
hearts yet we extend our sympathy
to the bereaved members of her own
family.
Let this preamble and resolution
be put upon our records and pub
l.shed in Middle Georgia Argus
and a copy given to her family.
