IIFLP FOR BRUNSWICK.
As stated last week, Jackson peo
pie have made a liberal contribution
to the yellow fever sufferers at Brun
swick. Mr. T. J. Lane made a little
canvass of the town and secured
$52.25, which was immediately for
warded to Mayor T. W. Lamb, and

QUINCES.
Quinces have apparently gone out
ot fashion. Very few of them are
offered for sale, and those generally
of an inferior quality. Purchasers
complain of a stringiness and lack
of flavor in fruit, and housekeepers
say that the preserves made from
them do not repav the labor of put
ting them up. The trouble seems
to be that farmers, in their eager
ness about their fruits, have neg
lected the quince trees, with disas
trous results.
This is a great mistake. If the
market is limited, it is at least a
good -paying ODe. Quince trees will
not stand neglect. If given fair
attention, they are no more difficult
*r exacting than any other fruit.
The chief requisites for the produce
ion of fine fruit are rich soil and
denty of moisture. The tree
hould be rather closely pruned, so
is to admit sun and air.
THE REVIVAL.
For ten day* a very was m revival
lias been in prngie.-s -*t the M* ihodi.-t
church. Rev J. L. .Morrill, the evan
gelist, and hio co-worker, Mr. L. It.
Giireath, an evangelistic singer, as
sisted by the Pastor and the church
generally, have done a good work.
At almost every service the altar
would be crowded with penitents
seekingiug pardon /or their sin
sick souls. Many hardened sinners
were made to tremble and some made
happy. The preacher made many
admirable hits, and his illustrations
were timely and to the poiut.
DEAD.
The whole town was thrown iuto
a gloom of sadness on Monday morn
ing when the announcement that tike
young and noble Splint Wynn was no
more, that his immortal spirit had
taken its everlasting flight to that
land from “whence no travel* r ever
returned.”
Mr. Wynn was well known to most
of our readers, he having for several
years been one ot our leading dry
goods salesmen. For two yeas-e he
lias been chief of the clothing depart
ment of the New York Store, and his
place there will be hard to till. List
year he attached himself to the Meth
odist church and had lived a con
sistent ’member to the time of his
death.
His remains were laid away at
New Hope church, in Henry county,
on Tuesday by his brethren of St.
John’s Lodge F. &A. M. Rev. J. H.
Eakes preached the funeral.
ANOTHER.
Little Toomic, the oldest child of
Mr. and Mrs-J. M. Goggans, died on
Saturday after only a short spell of
croup. She was a sweet little four
year-old, and it was almost heart
breaking to the fond and loving pa
rents to give her up. Funeral ser
vices were held at the Baptist church
at 8 a. m. Sunday morning, by Pastor
Carter, after which the remains were
conveyed to Cabaniss for interment.
THE COLT SHOW.
There was quite an interesting colt
show on the court house square on
Saturday, the contest being between
the progeny ot the noted stallions,
Flambeau, owned by Messrs. Thomp
son & Freeman, and Sam Weller,
owned by J. L. Hooten. There were
a large number on exhibition, and
every one was a fine one, but the prize
was awaided to Mr. J. L. Kelly,
showing the finest colt from Flam
beau, and to Mr. A A. Lemons, show
ing the finest colt from Sam Weller.
Mosers. Gus Dozieit a**d Tom Py e,
of Jasper county, add Mr Southerland
ot Idaho, were the judges.
A general premium for the finest
colt, barring the two mentioned, was
awarded to Mr. J. M. Ball lor a colt
from the Flambeau horse.
Both these horses are fine ones, and
their records are first-class. One
striking feature about the Thompson
and Freeman horses’ colts is that
they all very much resemble the sire.
No matter what color, shape or size
the mother may be, the colt possesses
all the well developed features of the
beautiful aud stylish father.

r.Y n. F. HIGH.
One morning as I bowed upon my knee,
Feeliug so sadly, forsaken and alone,
Thinking ot the Great Satanic Monster, ■
Who makes countless thousands mourn,
The gentle Saviour quietly entered my
room
And whispered, “Come utUome just as
thou art,
And let no more mournful, bygone days
Disturb thy precious, penitent heart,
Nor let the thoughts of the future mar thee
With fearful visions of the coming ill:
For I will be thy true, changeiess fiieud—
My tender mercy surrounds thee still.
Forget all thy transgressions and thy woe
And keep my commandments ever in
sight,
And 1 will be with you and guide you
And make your unseen future bright.”
And as I promised to serve and obey Him,
And fight the Great Monster till I die,
He threw his loving arms around me and
said,
“Heaven will bless you, my boy—only
try.”
Now I’m a child of the kind Saviour,
The truly Great and Merciful King.
Oh, how I do rejoice in the thought —
“I’m resting iu the shadow of .His wing.”
