THE ARGUS. *. J. II A IC.TI ON A: J. IWcDOl* AI,D, Frtitor% and Pnblihers. THE TWO RECORDS. " • Wlit Each Candidate Did While in the Legislature. Hon. W. Y Atkinson was a member of the legislature from Coweta county from 1880 to 1894. lion. C. A. Evans was State senator from Stewart county in 1859—60. Here are the records the two men made, by which wo may partially judge their character as statesmen: A T KIX 80H’ S R KCOIi D 1. Introduced a bill which nan pass ed, to make the of lice of commission er of agriculture elective. 2. Introduced the bill establishingthe Georgia Normal and Industrial school for girls. 3. Helped draw the bill by which the state road bet terment question was settled, with a saving to the Bt,ate of $750,000. 4. Introduced a bill, which was passed, by which the state is annu ally saved $15,000 for the inspection of oil. 5. Aided to in crease the common school fund from $400,000 to $1,250,- 000 per annum. 0. Aided to in crease the Confed erate soldiers and soldier’s widows ! pensions from $19,- 000 annnally to 400,000 annually. A LINE OF THOUGHT FO r-KOPI.E OF A I.L DENOMINATIONS. The East Tennessee Virginia & Georgia Railway, the popular route for the people of every ohtistian opinion. The East Tennessee Virginia & Ga. Railway have authorized reduced rates for the variaus religious gather ings which will take place in the near future. Kates this year by this line will be cheaper than ever before, as it is foremost in advocating low rates, especially for religious gatherings. For the SOUTHERN BAPTIST CON\ ENTION, which convenes at Dallas, Texas, from May 11th to 15th, all agents on th* East Tennessee Vir ginia & Georgia will sell tickets on May 7th, Bth and 9th at one fare tor the round trip. These tickets will be good for return thirty days. The East Tennessee Virginia & Georgia is the popular line to Dallas, offering excel lent train service with the finest Pull man carsattacaed. To the QUADRIENNIAL GEN ERAL CONFERENCE, Methodist Episcopal Church South, which con venes at Memphis May 3rd, 1894, tickets will be sold by all agents on April 30th, and May Ist and 2nd at one fare for the round trip, good un til June Ist, 1894. It may be well here to mention that the same rates and conditions are au thorized for the conference of the At rican Episcopal church which meets at Memphis the same time. THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY, PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, Nash ville, Tenn., May 18, causes one half of the regular rate to be placed in effect also, and agents will sell tickets to Nashville and re turn on May 14th, 15th, and 16th, good to return until June 2nd, 1894. It is almost unueceessary to speak of the excellent accommodations, etc., offered by the East Tennessee Virgin ia & Georgia Railway. The extreme popularity of this line, and large crowds of people carried by it annu ally to these conventions are a suffi cient demonstration by the people of the facilities offered by this Great Southern Trunk Line. For informa tion write to J. J. Farnsworth, Division Passenger Agent. Atlanta, Georgia. It is our opinion that if some of our farmers were to spend ae mueli time in endeavoring to solve the problem of how to make money on the farm as they do in attending every little jumped up speaking thac is daily advertised in the papers of Georgia, there would not be so many wearing long faces throughout this county of ours. Of course, it is their duty to keep well informed on all questions of a public nature, but they can never do so by listening to every little one-horse stump speaker that pops up In Jackson with an “axe to grind.” Bring in a bale of politics next fall and see what you get for it! It is natu ral to suppose that a public speaker only presents his side of the question •very time—and that side always con sists of “boosting himself for office.” Show us a man who is going around the conntry lecturing for the good of the people, and we will show you a white blackbird that flies without wings. Take your home paper and let your bal lot speak the sentiments of a careful studv. LOST—A very large plain gold ring. Engraved on tho inside “Jennie to Tube.” The finder will be rewarded by returning ring to this office, or to T. L. Williams. 4t I EVANS’ RECORD. 1. Voted to allow banks to suspend specie payments when there was no panic. 2. Voted to abol ish all laws against usury. there will be the bug also.” A num ber of names have been mentioned to represent us in the legislature. I had as soon vote for Mr. Dempsey or Mr. Hell asanybod}-. Mr. Bell would be the right man in the right place, and Mr. Dempsey would make a good one. There set ms t© be some fun in the race for receiver. They all seem to be good men. but some of them will stump their toe, fall down and spill the milk. They will have lots of fun at a very small cost. I like all of the candidates, but can’t vote for but one. 3. Voted to par don a worthless and cold-blooded mur derer of a man who was executing the law. 4. Introduced a bill to aboilish trial by jury. 5. Voted to re peal all laws appro priating money or aid by the state to educational purpo ses. 6. Voted against allowing Confeder ate privates to choose their offi cers. -Griffin News, Your scribbler set out 250 cabbage plants since the freez but they may get killed yet. Gardens are rather backward and it looks now like it would be some time before we will have any spring yegetables. We will have to plant largely of water melons and cantaloupes, in fact, will h ive to raise ever} thing we need at home, tor we see plainly that Clev eland is not going to help us any. So it is like Governor Tillman says we will have to get the West to help us out. By sticking together we can elect a man from the West that will give us free silver, and will be tor the people in stead of Wall street. Stubs. FOR EVANS. Messrs. Editors: —Apropose of the “deadly parallel” as drawn by one Mr. Glessner in the case of the people vs. W. Y. Atkinson, wc beg leave to say a few words. That the Atkinson boom is “peter ing” out is a fact potent to the most partisan, and the cause thereof is easily understood when we remember that the Macon Telegraph and Griffin News (a lovely pair) are his staunch est supporters. Mr. Glessner has gone back over a period of more than 30 years and has discovered a—mare’s nest. The truth is (his: Hon. Bill Y. has run his lit tie canoe against the rock of Gibraltar, and the little thing has been smashed, and Glessner, et. al., are doing their best to get up material for repairs. Hon. W. Y., as high “cockalorum” of that heterogeneous aggregation, sometimes called the Georgia “men agerie,” alias, the Georgia legislature, had a slate fixed, and to that august body (or to it seems) was given the the task of enlarging the gubernato rial chair so as to fit W. Y. Egotism and all The boys went merrily to their work, but struck a snag first lick. They had no trouble iu getting “Bill” aul the chair on a parity, but his ego tism aud that grand old Roman, Gen. Evans, stopped the pi-oceedings. The fight that Mr. Atkinson and his friends are now making on General Evans would be ludicrous, were it not that it is a reflection on the patriotism of Georgians, who have handed down to posterity, as a priceless heritage, a record of heroism aud devotion to principles that never has nor ever can be eclipsed by any nation. Mr. At kinson is making a noisy campaign, but he is finding out that “clap-trap” oratory is not what it is cracked up to be, even it Tom Watson has got a pat tent on it. With yours and Mr. Glessuer’s permission, we will try our had on a “parallel” and close for the pi*esent. Evans. 1. Wc have classes in Geometry, Algebra, Latin, Rhetoric, Composi tion and History who are delighted with their studies, and who are avail ing themselves of the opportunity so cordially awaiting them. We hotel monthly examinations and those examinations combined with daily recitations determine a students class standing. Those examinations, under which monthly reports are is sued, serve as a stirnulence for ambi tion. Verily, I believe the day is not far distant when this method shall be current in all schools. Then, and not till then, shall we hope to realize the benefit derived therefrom. An ounce of real preventative is worlh a pound of theory in any un dertaking. For instance the generals of ancient and modern times, who fought and serve i our country’seause, won names immortal, for practicing such strategy as had been taught them from a theoretical standpoint, while students at spich institutions.
