Davis, oi Henry county, were in town Tues day. We never knew before that Mr. Rosser made any claim to wealth, but he treated us to soda water, here the first of June, and actually paid cash for it. Mr. J. If. Mills, of Jenkiusburg, is probably the youngest delegate yet se lected to the gubernatorial convention. Mrs. G. W. Thurston, an estimable lady of our towu died last Saturday. Mrs. Thuiston was a consistent mem ber of the Primitive Baptist Church, and lived a long and useful life in this county. The children, the grand chil dren and numerous friends have our sympathy. Mr. Charles llarkness was buried today at Jackson cemetery, lie was in the prime of life, but that terrible and unrelenting enemy to humanity, the -cancer, fastened its fatal fangs upon his system and death came to his relief on W ednesday. BeO, who lives near Llyin in this county, and who is 75 years old, thought he hear.i a noise in his barn last Tuesday night about 3 o clock. He took his gun and went on an investigating tour. One Lewis Barkley, colored, had secured about I<K) pounds of fodder, and when he heard Mr. Bell approaching lie ran. Mr. Bell asked the gentleman to stop which he refused to do, until Mr. Bell persuaded him to stop suddenly by putting a load of shot in his thigh. It was a good shot to have been made in the night b} r as old a man as Mr. Bell. We regret to learn of the death of Mr. I hoinas Grissom, which sad event oc curred at the residence of Mr. Jud Rob erts, at \\ orthville, this morning [Thurs day.) Mr. Grissom was a young man of exemplary character, and was highly esteemed by all who kuew him. The sympathies of the akgvs are exteuded to his relatives in their sad bereave ment. W'e heard that there were only two votes cast for Evans at Worthville, but we know that to be false, for we voted three times befoie breukiast. Miss Carrie Moore, a fascinating young lady of this plate, who has been visiting friends in Jasi-er county, returned borne last week. Two of our young men spent Sunday in Ilenry county. They in sisted that it was nearer to return by Stark. W'e think tlie saying that the man that says, “Our Father which art in Heaven,” the loudest on Sunday is the one that keeps up the dram shops at the elections, was verified at tlie last election at Worlhville Mr. Beeiiian McKleroy, of Jackson, spent last Saturday ami Sunday with his parents here. Bradwell, the next gen eral examination will be held on Sat urday, June 2nd, at the court house, in the town of Jackson, commencing at 8 o’clock a, m. Assistant teachers, as well as principals ot schools, are re quired to have a license, or they can’t participate in the public school fuud of the county, I take this occasion also to give the information that the Teachers Insti tute of Butts county will convene on Monday the 18th day of Jime, and con tinue during the week. All persons holding a teacners license, whether engaged in teaching or not, unless they have permanently retired from teaching, are required to attend this Institute. Teachers will please bring with them for references their Gram mars, Geographies, Arithmetics and Fourth Readers, used in the schools of W. Harper, the 1 superintendent of public shools of Americas, Ga., will be our expeit, who will during tho week deliver two public lectures free to all who may attend. Subjects: “The way out of Poverty ” and ‘‘Some of the Wouders of Seieuce." Political, confederate and social cir cles at Lexingto , Ky., are more ex cited now than ever because a young woman’s auxiliary of the Confederate Association had stormy meetings and had refused to decorate the confeder ate graves because BreckeuGdge was a member of the veteran’s association. The president of the auxiliary says it will take no part in the Breckenridge case of a body. Mrs A. M. Harrison, secretary and her sister-in-law, Miss Marv Harrison, vice president, ofthe auxiliary, resigned their offices today. They are severe in condemnation of Colonel Breckenridge, and while they give no open reason for rssigning. They say plainly it ought not to be difficult to infer why they quit the organization.
