ONE DOLLAR PER ANNUM.
PEOPLE’S PARTY PRAYEIt.
O Almighty Dollar, our acknowl
edged governor preserver and bene
factor, we desire to approach thee on
this and every occasion with the rev
ence which is the due of superior ex
cellence, and the reward which shall
be cherished for exalted greatness.
Almighty Dollar, without thee in the
world we can do nothing, but with
thee w e can do all things When sick
ness lays its paralyzing hands upon us
tendered ot nurses, the inobUkillfulof
I*l*3 sicians, and when ttie last struggle
of mortality is over, and we are being
borne to the restingplaceof the dead,
thou canst provide a band of music
and a military escort to accompany
us hither, and last, but not least, erect
a magnificent monument over our
graves with a living epitaph to per
petuate our memory. And while
here, in the midst of misfortunes and
temptations of life, w e perhaps are ac
cused of crime, and brought before
magistrates, thou, Almighty Dollar,
canst secure us a good lawyer, a brib
ed judge, a packed jury and we go
scott free. Be with us, we pray thee,
in all thy decimal parts, for that thou
urt the only one altogether lovely and
the one among ten thousand.
We feel there is no condition in life
w'hcrc thy potent and all-powerful
charms arc not felt. Iu thv absenc*
how gloomy is the household, and
liow desolate the hearthstone, but
when thou, O Almighty Dollar, art
with us how gleeful the beefsteak
sings on the gridiron, how genial is
the warmth that anthracite coal or
hickory wood diffuses throughout the
apartment, and what an exuberance
°t joy continues to sw’ell every bosom ‘
thou art worshipped the world over;
thou hast no hypocrites in thy temple,
or co false hearts at thy altars; kings
* - 4 -- 1 - - WXJ Tt 111 w 4A ll Ct
all nations adoro thee; thou art loved
by the civilized and savage alike, with
unfeigned and untaltercd affection;
we continue to regard thee as the
handmaid of religion avid (he twin
sister of charity.
O! Almighty Dollar, be with us, we
beseech thee, attended by an unex
piessible number of thy ministering
angels made in thine own imajre, even
they be but silver quarters and dimes,
whoseglddemuglight shall illuminate
the value of penury and want with
heavenly radiance which shall cause
the awakened soul to break forth in
the acclamations of joy. Almighty
Dollar, thou art the guide of our foot
steps and the goal of our being.
Guided by tho silv< ry light we hope
to reach the golden gate and trium
phantly enter while hands harmoni
ously sweep the golden harp as we
enter the golden streets.
Almighty Dollar, thy shining face
Bespeaks thy wondrous power;
In my pockets make thy resting place,
I need thee every hour.
And now, Almighty Dollar, in clos
ing this invocation, we realize and ac
knowledge that thou wast the God of
our grandfathers, the two-fold god of
the children, and the three-fold god
cf their graudchildren. Permit us to
possess thee in abundance, m all thy
excellence, is our constant and unwav
ering prayer.
BARTLETT IN SPALDING.
The congressional race for this dis
trict is now beginning to loom up,
with Cabaniss, Bartlett, and Whit
field in tHe ring, and the contest
promises to be a lively one. Colonel
Cabiuiss will not find it as easy sail
ing in old Spalding as he did two
years ago. The people propose to
have a voice in saying who they de
sire to serve them in office. At pres
ent there is no doubt but that Judge
Bartlett is by odds the preference in
this county. —Griffin Call.
With the candidates now lu the
field Georgia will have excellent ma
terial from which to select her next
United States Senator, and while The
Weekly has no special preferance,
from our exchanges it seems that
Hon. A. O. Bacon has a decided lead
so far. TheLaGrange Reporter has
thi* to say of him :
“Tlie endorsement of Hon. A. O.
Bacon for the senate by the Troup
county democracy was the proper
thing to do. Besides his peerless
ability, patriotism and noble services
to Georgia in the past, Mr. Bacon has
peculiar claims upon the position.
Gus Bacon nas our best wishes for his
success, and we all hope to see him
elected by the next geueral assembly
to the high position he is so well pre
pared by character and gifts to fill,
with honor and benefit to the state.”—
Usury County Weekly.
