REPLY TO MR. REDMAN. Eds. Argus : -I noticed in the Inst igsvipof your paper a letter •Tom (.’has. L. Redman, to which I wish to make brief reply. Mr. Red man seems to be somewhat enthus ed in regard *o the government ownership of railroads and refers us to other countrueg which he say* own and operates them successful ly. Mr Redman, we declared in dependence of other countries long ago, and wc do not propose for other countries to dictate to us, and we as a people propose to be intelli gent, energetic, and ambitious enough to paddlj our own canoe There ig first about as much reasoi in the government ow ning and con trolling our lands and mules as there in in owning and operating on: railroads. About 1940 the state of Georgia built a road from Atlanta to Chat tanooga, 130 miles long, which it owned and operated, and asked and received from $20,000 to $50,000 annual appropriation to keep it in order. After the war and recon struction of tli3 state, the legisla lure passed an act to lease the road which was leased hv the joe Brown Company for 20 years, at $30,000 per month, which was paid prompt ly at tn expiration of each month and now 11 e railroad is leased to the Louisville & Nashville R, R. Company for $35,000 per month, without any expense. Now if this is not sufficient proof that private railroad owners can operate rail roads more successfully than cor porations and syndicates, 1 will acknowledge that lam in absolute ign trance of the whole affair. We acknowledge that some coun tries own and operate their roads, and they are the countries that have an absolute monarchial gov eminent, but that is no reason why we should want one. Now, Mr. Redman, for information You say when we yet free coinage of silver and plenty of money issued, et<‘. I ask upon whtrt basis are you anticipating theissue of ibis enor mous amount of money ? Suppose, the government corns all of the silver bullion in the vault* of New York, and puts it in circulation, it would take up all the silver certifi cates and we would have no more money than if it remained where it is as a basis, and silver certificates issued upon it to the full value thereof, and as to government bonds there has already been thous ands of dollars worth of them issued and we don’t think it likely to come from that source. To say nothing of Coxey's organized band of tramps that have so annoyed the northern states, we have had more idlers in the South since the organi zation of the third party than was ever known before, and they seem to expect some great gift from the government, and they will sit on the stool of do-nothing, whittle goods boxes and curse the govern ment because they don't bring it along. As the lonesome sound of the hooting owl may he heard from tire dismal swamp, so can the perpetual cry of the goods-box whitilers ; “Give us more money.” I readily acknowledge my inability to solve these problems ot mystery, but when we hear from you again we hope all will be made clear as a beautiful morn when the mists have cleared away. W. 11. Whaley. THREE KINDS OF THEM. From The Americus Times-Recorder. To The Times-Recorder—l used to think I knew what a “bimetallist” was, but 1 don’t think that I do now, there seem* to he so many mixed breeds of this species. Canyon give a definition of the term? Respectfully, W. B. H. There are at present three kinds of this animal known to naturalists, though the coming campaign may develop oth ers. 1. There is the original double-jointed bimetallist, who holds the orthodox creed, believing that bimetallism means the free and unlimited coinage of both gold and silver, without discrimination, of standard money of final payment at a standard ratio fixed by law. 2. There is the buy-metallist, who be lieves that the only way to keep silver money afloat at par is to buy it in or redeem it in gold obtained with bonds sold to Wall street; thus making silver coin a debt or liability of the govern ment, instead of legal tender t.o pay debt* with. Secretary Carlisle is a buy-metallist in both theory and practice, especially in practice as the fast disappearing gold reserve shows. M. Then there is the by-and-by-metal list who favors the coinage of silyer in the sweet by and by, when England con sents to permit the United States to run its own government without control from Lombard street. As the single gold standard enables England to con trol and manipulate the finances of the world, and collect back two dollars prin cipal, besides interest, for every dollar she has lent other nations, England will, of course, be delighted to forego her ad vantage, through an “internatiomal agree ment”—in the sweet by and by. The president of the United States is a by-and-by-metallist. FRESH LIGHT-BREAD Every day at Harp’s Market. We do our own baking, and onr bread and cakes are as good as the best. Moore, better known as “Betsy Hamilton” gave a highly enjoya ble entertainment to an appreciative au dience. Th 5 threatening weather pre vented many from going, hut those who attended are profuse in their admiration of “Betsy,” and her humorous charac ters. Those who stayed away missed the treat of their lives as it was the most enjoyable entertainment eyer given in Jackson. Judge Bartlett is a friend of the work ing classes, and this is the kind of legis lators we need in congress.- He preaches no gold hug doctrine, hut stick close to Jeffersonian democracy, and Whitfield and Cabauiss will find that the working classes are decidedly in the majority in this section, and Charlie Bartlett’s influ ence in congress will he strongly felt. Judge Carmichael, who lias been at tending the ordinaries c invention lias returned. He says the ordinaries’ from all over the country report no gain for the populists, except in Bartow. In fact, we have never used remedies that compare with them. Of the Piiis w e must say they are the best com bination of the qualities required in a prep aration of their nature we nave ever known, h e have none but words of praise ior them.
