Atkinson will knock the “Hine siglits” oft’Uio piano parly candidate in the gubernatorial election. Congress has passed the Interna tional and Cotton Stales Exposition appropriation bill, and Atlanta is jubilant. The government will have an exhibit at tho great show, Uncle Sam never does things by halves you make expect something fine. The following remark is attributed loan Episcopal divine: “Mary Jane” said he, solemnly to his trembing but buxom cook, who had been “carpeted” “this steak is cooked to a cinder and the potatoes are raw, You have left undone the things that ought to be done, and cooked too done the things that ought not to be done, and there is no health in them. “Look out Sal you will fall io the mud” as the hayseed said to his gal as they went to pass a puddle of water in the road each being on their own side of the road—Guess who reminded us of the above circumstance, byreact ing thescene and allowingone of Jack son’s pretty girls to walk home alone, he doing the same, not long since. The Atlanta Commercial very prop erly says: “It will be Congressman Bartlett, of the Sixth district. “•Its success in defeating Congress man Cabaniss for re-election is a no table instance of what dash, courage, frankness and ability will accomplish. “Judge Bartlett possesses these at tributes to a distinguished degree, ami he will make a representative in Con gress ot whom the whole slate will le proud, and whom the people may trust. “The Commercial predicts a notable cireer tor the brilliant young Geor gian and congratulate the country on seeming such a strong addition to the membership of the lower house. “In him wo have honesty and abili ty distinctively linked.” Mr. Bartlett has a substantial hold on the people throughout this section. The monotony of our little village was broken by an eiitertaimeu! given by the Young Men's Social Club at the ball ou the night of August 9th It was by far the greatest social event of the season. As the quiet ‘hades of evening lengthened and merged into one, and as the dewdrops began to ‘Darkle in the moonlight, couple after couple, some with hearts light and in the bloom of youth, some with hoary locks, the Indellible stamp of only a few years filed in one after another, until the house was filled to overflowing. When tints for the exercises to be gin came and the curtains were rolled back silence reignel over the entire crowd and every one was impressed with the appearance of the stage which was an evidence of the taste so characteristic of, and did honor to the young ladies who decorated it. After a song by the club Mr. Roberts offered a prayer which reminded us that above all there was a grander stage and a more interesting perform ance in which we must some day be actors. Speeches, tableaus, dialogues, recitations, and music followed. The manner in which they wree band ied showed that although being in its infancy th? club contained talent that only requiicd training to place it in the foremost ranks. Of the entire programme the tab leaus and recitations deserve cspec ial notice and particularly the tableau “The Res per and the Flowers,” which impressed every one who saw it with its beauty and exactness, and the rec itation, “Tho Peril of the Passenger Train,'’which was recited in a tone being manner and won the applause of the crowd and the admiration and flowers of friends. The entire audience was entertained beyond their expectation and all went home highly pleased with the even ings amusement. FOR SALE. 40 saw Van Winkle Gin, Feed er and Condenser, all good as new. It is now trying to bass a bill to pul sugar on the free list, but the probabilities are that it will never go through, it has passed congress but the senate will kill it deader than the third party when it gets a whack at it.
