RFERRETS AND FERRETING: the Little Animal* Are Handled f Where They Are Made to Work. ■in En g 1:i n<i ferrets are more for work Han as pets and are used for making bolt from their burrows. To H this scarcely any training is neces sary: the three young ferrets which we the other day worked as well as ■• ir more experienced parents. There various reasons why white ferrets ■v to be preferred as opposed to the Hnvn polecat variety. They are ■mally more docile and pleasant to ■indie. A brown ferret is apt to be ■ pped up by a sharp dog in mistake a rat or rabbit, while a white one ■ always apparent, even when moving the densest herbage. This ■>. cially applies to night time, ind ncc poachers invariably use white Hrnls. Gamekeepers who know their ■adness prefer ferrets taken from ■ma kers to any others. The poacher ■r. fully selects his ferrets, and from ■a- nature of his trade he cannot afford H 1 >rk bad ones. Some ferrets cause ■ kbits to bolt rapidly, while others Hrc slow. I Sometimes a ferret will drive a rab ■ ' to the end of a blind burrow, and ■o. r killing it will not return until it ■.m gorged itself with blood; and more H- able is added if the ferre* curls i up for an after-dinner sleep. ■ . n, of course, it has either to be left IS big out; if the former, it is well to Hur every exit and return with a dead Ha kbit when hunger has succeeded the I) rged sleep. Ferreting is mostly I act iced in winter; and it is to guard H 'ainst such occasions as these that H rking ferrets are generally muzzled. H\ cruel practice used to obtain of Htitching together the lips of the fer- H •-> to prevent their worrying rabbits Hud then “laying up.” But the most Humane method of muzzling is with a H >ft string, a muzzle constructed of Hvhieh may be quite effective and at the Ha me time not uncomfortable to wear. Hare must be taken not to hurt the fer- Hct, as if the string annoys him he will Hndcavor to do nothing but get it off. H>ccasionally ferrets are worked with a Hinc attached, but this is an objection- H'dc practice. There may be a root or H’ irk in which the line may get en- Hangled, when there will be digging ■ml ho end of trouble in getting at it. Reeds sown with artillery. ■ Ounpowdor Helped to Plant Trees on a Rocky Crag. I Alexander Nasmyth, the landscape Ha in ter, was a man fruitful in expedi- Hits. To his mind the fact that a could not be done in the ordinary ■aimer was no reason why it should ■e given up. Ills son relates the fol interesting example of his in duke of Athol consulted him as ■■wine improvements which he de ■n and to make in his woodland scenery Hear Dunkeld. Among other things, a Hr; ain rocky crag needed to be plant ed with trees, to relieve the grim bar- Hnm ssof its appearance. The ques wasuhow to do it, as it was impos ■iklc for ut lv mau to climb the crag, in Holer to set seeds or plants in the clefts Hf the rock. I A happy idea struck my father. Hav- Hig observed front of the castle a Hair of email cannon, used for firing Ha kites on greatdays, it occurred to him Hu turn them to account. A tinsmith in Him village was ordered to make a num- Her of canisters with-covers. The can- Hstcrs were filled with all sorts of suit- Hklc tree seeds. The cannon was load- Hl mid the canisters were fired up ■gainst the high face of the rock. Hht y burst and scattered the seeds in Hi directions. Some years afterward, Hin n my father revisited the place, he Has delighted to find that his scheme Hf planting by artillery had proved Huvessful; the trees were flourishing Hi all the recesses of the cliffs. WAYS OF THE POMPANO. Be I# a Frisky Jumper, as Well as Deli rious Food Fish. yfrfre of the most delicious food fishes semi-tropics is the pompano. In Hzu and shape he is not unlike the Hun ruler of the northerri*estuaries, but, ■dike the flounder, he swims edge- Hiso instead of fiat on his belly. In H>lor his seales are gray, white, gray- Hh blue and golden yellow, and when He leaps from the water, as he fre- Hiently does, the glinting of the gold- H scales in the sunlight forms a beau- Hfid sight. A traveler just returned Horn Lake Worth, on the lower east Hast of Florida, writes to the New Herk Herald: “As we approached the South of the canal the fish appeared H be more numerous, and they made Hug jumps into the air all about us. Hlu }' were chiefly mullet and pom- B and once I counted five in the air H the same time. H"before we reached the dredge boat, Hx miles from the foot of the lake, we four pompano, all of which had from the water and landed ac- Hdvntally in the bottom of our boat. Bie of them struck our boatman, Ben H'ie, in the breast, and the blow was B sufficient force to nearly wind him Br a minute. Since ice factories have Sen established along the Indian Bver and on Lake Worth, pompano are ■ipped to the northern markets in S>v:e quantities. They ‘run’ through- B the year, but make the best eating the winter months.” ■ A New Geographical Apparatus ue marine globe is anew physical to produce currents similar s-a currents. It consists of a glass ■ 'ke under the interior well of which constructed the massive outline of ■ntinents and the hollows of sea The bottom of the sea is ■: rued of an interior sphere, eoncen- Sd with the one of glass, moving on a Brt ical axis, and is worked by a gearing. sea basins are filled with water con twining - particles of stearine in suspen- Son, which render all its movements sible. -The exterior of the apparatus x-s not differ much from that of a ?< graphical globe, and its merit is iat it tends directly to facilitate the udy of geography, so far as the sea irrents are concerned. No fewer than 86,914 people passed through the turnstiles during the five days the fete was kept open. Twenty thousand pounds were raised in November, 1890, at a bazar in Ldinburg on behalf of masonic institu tions. The sum of £13,716 was taken at a bazar held at Glasgow in Febru ary, 1890, in aid of a students' union at the university. On May 17, 1864, at the close of the Metropolitan fair held in New York, John 11. Gourlie, chairman of the finance committee, transferred to George T. Strong, treasurer of the United States sanitary commission, the sum of $1,000,000 as the “first install ment” of the proceeds of the fair. He expected SIOO,OOO to be added later. ENDING A FAMILY ROW. A Wile’s Stratagem for Getting Evea with Her Stubborn Husband. The other evening, says the New A ork Recorder, as a muscular person was passing a house, a lady who stood at the gate called out to him: “Sir, I appeal to you for protection!” What’s the matter?” he asked, as he stopped short. “There’s a man in the house and he wouldn’t go out of doors when I ordered him to.” “He wouldn’t, eh! W’e’ll see about thatJ’ Thereupon the man gave the woman his coat to hold and sailed into the house. He found a man at the supper table and took him by the neck and remarked: “Nice style of brute you are, eh? Come out of this or I’ll break every bone in your body!” The man fought, and it was not until a chair had been broken and the table upset that he was hauled out of doors by the legs and given a fling through the gates. “Now, then, you brass faced old tramp, you move on or I’ll finish you!” “Tramp! Trampl” shouted the vic tim as -he got up. “I’m no tramp! I own this property and live in this house!” “You do?” “Yes, and that’s my wife holding your coat.” “Thunder!” whispered the muscular man, and he gazed from one to the ""d realized that it was the wife s method ot nnumiu 8 had been having with her husband. And then he made a grab for his coat and disappeared into the darkness.
