Mexico’s Unlucky Day.
Tuesday is the unlucky day in Mex
ico. If you were born on a Tuesday,
never admit it. You probably have
been a disaster all your life, but peo
ple -will firmly believe that you are an
unlucky dog and have the evil eye into
the bargain if they find that a Tuesday
was honored with your birth. I know
a man who started on a Tuesday with
money to pay off the hands in a facto
ry near the city and went instead to
Acapulco, where he took the Panama
steamer. The board of directors of
the manufacturing company passed a
resolution affirming their undying
faith in his honesty and attributed his
error to having started to the mill on
Tuesday. —Boston Herald.

Useful Recipes.
Orange Pie. —The jaico and part of
the rind of one orange, two tablespoon
fuls cornstarch, one cupful hot water
with one-fourth box gelatine dissolved
in it.
Cracker Dessert. —Lay whole soda
crackers separately on a plate; soak in
a little boiling water, cover with sweet
ened cream and lay a small piece of
jelly on each.
Cake Recipes. —A labor-saving way
of making cake is to measure out the
flour, the sugar and the baking pow
der that the recipe calls for, and sift it
all together several times. Beat the
required number of eggs, soften the
butter, but do not melt it, add the milk
and flavoring and stir in the above mixt
ure and beat five minutes. Place the loaf
in a well-heated oven and bake until
done, -and when cut you will find a fine
grained, light, delicious cake, with half
the usual labor.
Surprise Cake.— Measure out one
and a half cupfuls of flour, one cupful
of sugar, one teaspoonful of cream tar
tar and half a teaspoonful of pulver
ized soda; sift all together half a doz
en times. Beat two eggs, soften three
level teaspoonfuls of butter, add half a
cupful of sweet milk, stir in the above
mixture and bake in a quick oven.
Steamed Suet Pudding.— One cup
ful of stoned and chopped raisins, the
same of chopped suet, one cupful of
brown sugar, the same of sour milk,
one teaspoonful of soda, and flour
enough to make a stiff batter, and
steam three hours. Add spices to the
taste.
Baked Indian Pudding. —One quart
of sweet milk, four tablespoonfuls of
corn meal, one cupful of sugar, one
half cupful of molasses, one teaspoon
ful of salt, the same of cinnamon, a
tablespoo aful of butter; scald all togeth
er and when cool add two beaten eggs,
and bake one hour.
Vinegar Pie.— Roll out dough as for
fruit pie, and put it in your paD, then
put in a layer of sugar, and then a
layer of sifted flour, a layor of sugar
on that, take one-half teacup of good
vinegar, sprinkle o'rer the sugar and
flour, and spice to suit the taste, bake
with a top crust, a good substitute,
when fruit is scarce.
To Prevent Rust. —lron or steel
immersed for a few minutes in a solu
tion of carbonate of potash or soda
will not rust for years even vhen ex
posed to a damp atmosphere. To pre
serve polished iron work from rust mix
some copal varnish with as much olive
oil as will make it greasy, to which
add nearly as much spirits of turpen
tine and apply. To clean rust off iron
or brass (when the latter is not gilt or
lacquered), mix tripoli with half its
quantity of sulphur and lay it on with
apiece of leather; or emery and oil
will answer the same purpose. If
steel be lusty oil it and let it remain
two or three days, then wipe it dry
with clean rags and polish with flour
emery, pomiee stone, powdered or un
slacked lime.— Ex.
“Jack, dear,” said Mrs. Bellefleld to
her husband, “I think it will be cheap

house for a week or two than to get

you any objection?”
“Not if you get a real pretty one,”
i replied Mr. Be'lefield.
