They tell a good one on the bank
in McDonough. It is said that it pays
for cotton in silver. If you sell six
or eight bales, the bank loads you
down with silver dollars. Siuee this
payment in silver has been going on
there has been quite a demand in
McDonough for lire arms to protect
the'sellers from robbery while on the
way home with pockets stuffed with
silver dollars.
Prof. T. J. Woof ter of Mercer Un
iversity was in Jackson a few days of
last week in the interest of his school.
He has charge of the mathematics
department of the university. He
says it is quite probable that ex
go/ernor Northen will be the next
president of Mercer. The trustees
and faculty will manage the institu
tion until next summer when Mr.
Northen will be in position to aedept
the presidency.
Need of Shelter.
As the winter season is approach
ing we hope to see some effort made
by the merchants to Lave a public
shelter for the benefit of the farmers
who drive to town and whose animals
are compelled to take the weather as
it comes. At a very little expense a
public wagon yard and stalls for stock
could be put up. It is indeed a
hardship on mules and horses to have
to take the sun and rain for hours at
a time. We hope there will soon be
erected a shelter for their protection.

Don't Lose Your Votes t'or Rryan.
Tnere are people who do not under
stand the system under which our
presidents are elected. There are
very intelligent men who think it will
be of advantage to Bryan in Georgia,
for instance, he will .head both the
Democratic and Populist electoral
tickets, and that his effective vote
here will be the sum of the vots cast
'for those two tickets. This would be
true if the people voted directly for
president and vice president, but
they do not vote for them at all.
Their names at the head of the ticket
are simply distinguished marks.
That is all.
The vote is cast for the electors;
and where the electors on the two
tickets are as much in opposition to
each other as they would be if one
were for the Democratic nominees and
the other for the Republican. This
would be true even were Bryan and
Sewall or Bryan and Watson to head
both the electoral tickets.
It results from this that, although
Bryan’s name may appear at the head
of both the Democratic and the Pop
ulist electoral tickets, he is actually
running against himself.
People speak loosely of voting for
Bryan and Sewall or Bryan and Wat
son when, in reaility, they do not vote
for them at all. Their names torn
from the top of their respective elec
toral tickets woul not invalidate the
tickets a particle. The names of the
electors would be left, and it is the
vote for them that counts.
It ought to be plain, from this, that a
thousand votes cast for the Democrat
ic electors and a thousand cast for the
Populist electors so far from counting
as two thousand votes for Bryan and a
thousand, each, for Sewall and Wats
on, would simply neutralize each
other, and leave the candidates in the
same position, relatively to each other,
as if not a vote had been cast. Only
one set of electors should be voted for;
and, as the Democrats are stronger in
the State aud in the country at large
than the Populists, the Democratic
elettors should be chosen. Then, not a
vote would be lost ,but every one would
count for Bryan.
