HEAR YOURSELF \VI\K The Wonderful Phoiientioscopc that ('all Defeat Diseased by Sou ud. Vou can hear yourself wink. A wonderful machine has be?n invented by which the hitherto imperceptible sound of the action of the eyelid is made ciear and distinct to the ear. The inventing is called the phone -11 dose ope. The new wonder was designed to be nsed by physicians and surgeons for detecting the presence of diseases by sound. With its perfection it will be possible for the medical world to pre pare a perfect chart which will enum erate the sound of every disease known, and to instantly detect that sound with an application of the phonendoseope. There will be no iflistake or misconstructions in the matter of a diagnosis. The delicate instrument, which those are fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of, now handled as careful ly as if it were mace of diamonds, con- sists of a circular or tympanum box j of highly polished metal. On one of its flat surfaces there are two aper tures for the attachment of that num ber of little rubber tubes, ea£h fitted witted with a tiny elbow nub to be placed in either ear. The other sur face shows a thin and senstive disk, which is readily thrown into vibra tion. The thin disk, being controlled by the compressed air of the circular box, it so sensitive that the faintest breath upon the disk sends a wave current through the box, into the rub- ber tubes and against the eardrum or the listening person. Not only can this breath upon the disk be heard, but its force in transit is multiplied a thousand fold, so that when it reaches the ear it sounds like the roaring of a gale of wind at sea. Tapping the disk lightly wi h the fingers sends a sound into the ears like the tramping of many horses, and the wink of an eyelid give forth a sound like the fall of heavy wa ters. l*y the arrangement of the rubber v onnecting tubes it will be under stood fhat the end can be put into the ars so that any one can hear himself pIE J|e\V VORK gTORE, JACKSOJN , O-A.., arranged and ready for your in spection. Mr R S Brown, manager of the ary goods room, spent nearly 4 works in New York and other Eastern markets in search of the attractions for his department Never before has Jackson or any town seen %ust such another selection of merchandise, and the prices are astonishingly low. We have never had as complete assortment or dress fabrics as Mr Brown brought on, Domestic as well as the most choice and beautiful foreign weaves. For the use of surgeons in the loea" ting of disease is an ingenious contri vance, which consists of a second disk attached to the first, with a vulcanite rod fastened—so that the area of aus cultation may be extremely circum scribed. By adding the rod, the condu ction of sound is only slightly diminis ed, and thus are combined the princi ple of the solid stethoscope with that of the tympanum. The rod usually attached to the instrument is about two inches long, but rods of greater length are ot.fen used in exploring cavities of the an atomy which communicate with the exterior. If one of the large rods being inserted in the mouth, the sound of swallowing can be heard, and the dropping of the soft palate is plainly audible. Used in connecting With the mi crophone transmitted of the tele phone, it would reproduce the beat ing of an irregular heart or the whee zing of a diseased bronchial tube at a great distance. Branched tubes are also furnished by means of which a number of per sons may listen to the same magni fied sound at the same time.
