OUR COTTON MARKET*
Jaekson the iVla.rltet for Adjoiniug:
(JountieK-Farmer* Bringing their
Cotton Where tlie IQoue) is*
During the past two weeks many
wagons not familiar to the highways
of Butts county have rolled into
Jackson bearing their burden of cot
ton. Many strange faces not accus
tomed to our everyday visage are
constantlv seen on our streets these
days. Wagon after wagon may be
seen now on the streets of Jackson
bearing the trade mark or name of a
dealer in Griffin, Forsyth, Barnesville
Monticello or McDonough or even
Covington. Hundreds of bales of
cotton are being marketed in Jackson
from Spalding, Pike, Monroe Jasper,
Newton and Henry counties. These
are not mere idle remarks of an en
thusiastic editor working for the good
of his town, but the numer >us teams
and people from these counties attest
the truth of what we have said.
Thirty bales of eotton from Spald
ing county were brought to Jackson
in one day of the past week. It
comes from all quarters in like pro
portions.
The market here during the present
season has been from an eighth to the
fourth of a cent higher than at any cf
our neighboring markets. This alone
counts for the cotton we are getting
from other counties.
However since these people from
other counties have brought their
cotton here, they have found that
our merchants not only keep a fine
line of merchandise, but that their
prices are from 12 to 25 per cent low
er than elesewhere. So now there
are two inducements for them to
come; good prices for cotton and low
prices for goods. These are bringing
the people.
Join the procession.

SCHOOL HOSIERY. '
This busy department is right on deck with a full, equipment
of strong, durable stockings for the little folks. We’ve anticipated
your wants in this particular and can fit out the girls and boys with
better stockings at lower prices than you've been in the habit of
paying.
Good quality fast black 10c.
Heavy ribbed bicycle hose, 25c kind, for 15c.
Our Lining Department
Just a line or two to emphasize its many excellencies- We
buy and sell none but the best. It pays lor vou to buy the best;
they may cost you a cent or two more than the trashy, jobby sorts,
but they’ve got the wear in them and that’s what you’ie af f er.
There is not a lining department in this section better equip
ped with everything that goes into the make-up of a dress or gar
ment of any kind. Don’t buy trashy linings. It’s the poorest kind
of economy.
Ask for latest style skirt binding. It will outwear any dress.
CLOSE THESrORES.
Recently there has been some talk
of closing the stores at 7 o’clock dur
ing the winter months begiuing Oct.
Ist. This is the best suggestion that
has been ma le in many a day and we
are sure that if carried ottt that good
wife who never sees her husband ten
minutes during the weeK vill be most
thankful. We are told by the mer
chants that it is an absolute expense
to keep open ot eight. The only rea
son why they keep open is because
the other man wont close his doors.
It is a duty a man owes his family to
be with them at least a part of the
time. As it<s at present, our busi
ness men swallow their dinner in
about ten minutes and then rush to
tne store and complain of indigestion
ail the evening. Likewise at supper
and the truth is they never take time
to have a pleasant chat with wife and
babies. But its business, business,
all is business. There are some other
things in life worth looking after as
well as business. Close the doors and
spend your evenings at home. How
glad your wife will be.

ELECTION RETURNS.
Ordinary Carmichael Receives In
structions from the Secretary of
State as to how the Returns
Shall be Made*
The following has been receiyed by
Judge Carmichael relative to the tal
ly sheets and returns for the coming
election.
Atlanta, Ga., Sept. 80 1896.
To the Hon. Ordinary. Butts Cos.
Dear Sir:
Many enquiries have been received
at this office as to wheather it is nec
essary to keep three or lour lists of
voters and tally sheets at the elect
ion on the 7th. of October, and in
order that Managers at the precincts
may be fully advised and all doubt
be dispelled, this circular is sent out
jto Ordinaries. The old law on the
subject has not been changed and on
ly three lists of the names of voters
need be kept.
While the returns of the election
of Senators and Representatives are
made on one sheet and those of Coun
ty Officers on another, both may be
enclosed, together with one list of
voters, in the same envelope and
mailed to this office. Attached to
to the returns for Senators and Rep
resentatives there must be a tally
sheet in the usuallo form showing
the vote received by each candi
date.
Attached to the returns for County
Officers must also be a tally she** 1 '
showing the vote received by each
candidate for each offiice.
Thus while separate returns and
seperates tally sheets for the two
classes of officers (Legislature and
County Officers) are sent up, one
list of voters will answer for both*
Sure t Win.

cure. Hood’s Sarsaparilla cures—abso
lute, permanentlp cures. It is the One
True Blood Purifier. Its superior merit
is an establish fact, and merit wins.
Hood’s Pills are easy to take, easy to
cperate. Cure indigestion, headache.
CLOTHING, HATS, SHOES.
Full line of Underwear, etc,, bought di'
rect from Headquarters,latest styles.
* GROCERIES
Of every description at Free Silver prices. Texas Rust Proof
Oats at 42 1-2 cents bushel.
Fall Jackets and Capes.
Just the thing for the cool days. In fact, a useful garment for
nine months in the year. They’re all moderate priced affairs an j
[top notch of style, of course. Prices range from SI.OO to ITUEO.
But it will be best for both these re
turns together with the list of -voters
to be sent up to this office in the same
envelope address to the Secretary of
State.
The returns for Governor and
State House Officers must be made
precisely as heretofore and address
to the Preisdent of the Senate and
Speaker of the House of Represen
tatives, care of the Secretary of
State. There has been no change
whatever in the law governing the
election of these officers.
While three envelopes were sent
you, one for the State officers, one
for the county officers and one for
Senators ani Representatives, you
may destroy one and send up the re
turns for Senator and Representatives
and those for county officers in the
same envelope, being careful to en
close with them one list of voters.
Very truly yours
ALLEN D. CANDLER
Secretary of State
There are a great many of the unfortu
nate ones in this world, greater in
number than those who. are blessed
with good digestion. To some people
the greatest misfortune is not to be
able to eat everything set before
them. “I suffered for years with
Dyspepsia, and everytning I ate dis-
agreed with me. I was induced to
try Simmons Liver Regulator and
was cured. I now eat everything.”
—M. Bright Madison Parish, La.
FITZGEBALD FILIBUSTERS.
Mr. H. C. Thaxton, who has never
had a superabundance of love for the
Yankees certainly has less now than
ever. A few days ago some of those
Yankee gypsies that ex-governor
Northern has induced to this state,
camped near Mr. Thaxtons’ house
and during the night they looted his
corn field. Like the Arabs, these
bedouins of the north hoisted tents
and silently stole away leaving broth
erThaxton a few bushels of corn
short for his fattening pokers. A
crowd of these same felloes who had
become disgusted with Fitzgerald and
were on their way back to the notrh
treated our neighbor likewise while
pursuing along the road would fill
I their wagons with his corn.
Growing
Children
One-third of all the children
die before they are five years
old. Most of them die of some
wasting disease. They grow
very slowly; keep thin in flesh;
are fretful; food docs not do
them much good. You can't
say they have any disease, yet
they never prosper. A slight
cola, or some stomach and
bowel trouble takes them away
“sSoTTS EMULSION of
Cod-liver Oil with Hypophos
phites is just the remedy for
growing children. It makes
hard flesh; sound flesh; not
soft, flabby fat. It makes
strong bones, healthy nerves.
It changes poor children to
children rich in prosperity.
Book about it free for the asking.
