INTERESTING FACTSON
THE JUDGE’S RACE.
Spalding County Has Furnished

Now that Pike county has a candi
date for Judge of the Supe ior courts
of the Flint Circuit, it will prove in
teresting to study the record of the
oast showing what counties have fur
nished the Judges, and for what
length of time.
The Circuit was organized in 1824.
Pike county has been in the Circuit
ill this time, 86 years, and has never
furnished a Judge nor a Solicitor-
General .
Every other county of those now
composing the Circuit, except Fay
ette, has furnished a Judge, and some
of them have had several; besides,
nearly all of the n have also furnish
ed a Solicitor-General. It will be
borne in mind that Fayette county

I National Hay, Grain and Storage Cos.,
has been in the Circuit onlv about
ten years, and she now has the Solic
itor-General.
All the other six counties have been
in the Circuit siuee its organization,
and during this entire period Spac
ing county has had 7 of the Judges,
woo held the office for 20 yea s; Mon
roe has had 3, who held the office for
12 years; Upson has had 2, who held
the office for 5 years; Butts has had
1, who lie I d the office for 4 year>;
and Henr.v has had 1, who held the
office for 12 years.
Since the Democrats recover *d con
trol of the State from the Republi
cans, on January 1, 1873, the Circuit
has had the following Judges:
Hon. John I. Hall, whose term be
gan January 1, 1873; he lived at
Thomaston about, one year and then
moved to Griffin. He continued in
office nearly five years longer and re
signed.
Hon. A. M. Speer, of Griffin, wa„
then appointed. He remained in
office about two years, and was elect
ed Justice of the Sup-eme Court.
Hon. John D. Stewart, of Griffin,
was then appointed. He served a
little over five years and was elected
to Congress.
Hon. Jas. S. Boynton, of Griffin,
was then appointed. Ho served a
little over seven years and resigned.
Hon. J. J. Hunt, of Griffin, was
then appointed. He served nearly
two years.
Hon. M. W. Beck, of Butts county,
was then elected, and served nearly
lour years and resigned.
The present Incumbent, Hon. E. J.j
Reagan, of Henry, was then appoint
ed, and at the end of his term, Jan
uary, 1911, will have served a little
over twelve years.
Thus it will be seen that Spalding
county, during the past 87 years, has
had 5 Judges, who held the office
rearly 21 years of the time, while the
other six counties combined have had
only 2 Judges, who held the office
only 16 years. Besides this, daring
the same 87 years, Spalding has had
2 Solicitors-General, Monroe has had
2. Butts has had 1, Henry has had 1,
Fayette has had 1, while Pike has
had neither Judge nor Solicitor-Gen
eral.
During said period o' 87 years,
Spalding has had more than twice
as many Judges as all the other coun
ties combined, and has had the office
for 21 years, pver half the entire
time.
Does it appear unreasonable that
Pike should now claim something?
About 86 years’ waiting and helping
all the other counties to get offices,
ought not the others now to help her
to get a little slice? Fair-minded
men all over the Circuit will certainly
recognize her claims. Could any
claim be stronger?
Even our good neighbor, Spalding,
after having had so many of the
lunges and Solicitor- w<*iurai, and
for so long a time, must recogn.z.y
the strength of our claim, and in a*!
support ourcandidate,
instead of urging one of her own sons
fur the place. Oujht she not to rest
for a little whih* and let old Pike
have just one little nibble?
Of course it may be said that the
rotation rule does not apply to the
Judges. This is true, and still, where
one county mas never had a Judge
*md a'l the Others have had from one
to seven, fair-minded men every
where will look with favor upon the
candidacy of the man presented by
the lone county.
Assuredly such candidate should be
a mail of character and ability and
fitted for the place. As to this point
no person will raise any question, for
every man in the Circuit who knows
Judge Dupree, the candidate present
ed by Pike county, will admit that
he is in every way well qualified for
the place.
Among those who know him no
man is more popular. All acknowl
edge his fine character, judicial
temperament, kind nature, firmness,
impartiality, and unyielding resist
ance to wrong, and obedience to truth
and right. His long experience as
County and City Court Judge has
given him much valuable experience
in trying and deciding all kinds of
cases in an able and impartial man
ner and indicates the way in which
he would fill the more important
office to which he now aspires.
Without disparaging in the least
the chars ter or ability of the able
Judges who have heretofore filled the
office, or of the able and distinguished
gentleman who is now opposing him,
we present to the voters of the Circuit
the claims of our county to some
little participation in the offices that
belong to the Circuit, aud ask that
they recognize our rights as based
upon the foregoing facts.
Even if wo. had already participated
equally with the other counties in
the offices, the Circuit could not do
better than bestow the Judgeship
upon our fellow-citizen Judge E. F..
Dupree
We present him to tye voters or
the Circuit with the assurance that
vere he as well known to the voters
if other counties as he is to those off
this county, his election would be
practically unanimous.—Pike County
