HELD COTiuN C.C
Oldest Baie in the World Has Just
Been Sold
Jackson, Ga. —So far as Is known,
the oldest bale of cotton i.i the world
was sold here this week, being bought,
by Etheridge, Smith & Cos., from T.
H. Grebr. The hale of cotton was
ginned on December IS), 1872, by water
power and wtas packed on an old hand
lever press in use at that time. Dur
ing tha season cf 1872 cotton had
been selling for Id cents per pound,
but as vais bale was late being pre
pared for market., that price could
not be obtained when it was taken
to Griffin. So tlie cotton was carried
back home, its owm: declaring he
would never sell for less than 10
cents. He was 38 years in having his
promise fulfilled.
Only once since 1872 has cotton
been above 10 cents and that was
during the Sully boom, when it went
half a cent above that figure. Mr.
Greer did not sell at that time, think
ing the nam-Ket would reach zu cents.
In this he was mistaken, however, and
he has held the cotton for 10 cents
ever since. Local cotton buyers have
had their eyes on this coiton for
some time. A fancy price was of
fered for it during the St. Louis expo
sition, it being uesired for exposition
purposes, bm Mr. Greer would not
sell.
This week he drove to town and
was offered It) cents per pound for
the bale, which weighed when it was
first ginned 505 pounds. After 38
years it now weighs 488 pounds. Only
once has it been repacked, and that
was in 1894, when the cotton was
found to be perfectly sound. The
bale has been placed on exhibition in
the window of Etheridge, Smith &
Cos., and is being viewed by hundreds
of persons.
PANIC IN FACTORY.
Steam Pipe Bursted and Girls Made
Rush for Exits-
Chicago.—Eighteen girls were in
jured, several seriously, in a fire in
the Central Steam Laundry. Several
of the girls jumped from windows
and others were injured in an ex
plosion. Four are in a serious condi
tion at a hospital.
The panic was caused by the burst
ing of a steam pipe in the mangle
room on the second floor. When the
clouds of steam burst into the room
the girls became panic-stricken and
seven of them jumped from the sec
ond floor windows.
Too high pressure is believed to
have been the cause of the bursting
of the pipe. More than 200 girls were
working on the second and third
floors. A rush was made for the
windows and exits and several were
slightly injured in the scramble. The
majority of the g’rls injured are not
20 years old.
