“AVAILABILITY” OF FERTILIZERS.
W. A. Wors+iam, Professor of Agricul
tural Chemistry.
Inquiry—'‘‘What constitutes ‘‘avail
ability’- of fertilizer ingredients?
“Availability” means ability to dis
solve in water and thus furnish food
for plants which can take their food
only in soluble form.
Potash, as applied in fertilizers, is
I practically all available. Phosphoric
acid, as applied in fertilizers, is only
partly available. Only 16 per cent, of
acid .phosphates, is available; in other
. words, soluble phosphoric acid.
| Ground phosphate rock is not avail
able in the absence of humus, but
with humus it gives results equal to
acid phosphate.
Nitrogen is all available In the form
of nitrate of soda or sulphate of am
monia. In organic forms, that is, in
the form of manure, vegetable matter,
bone, blood, etc., there must be de
cay. In other words, it must be act
ed upon by bacteria which will con
vert it into available form.
Inquiry—What is the plant food
value of the manures from various
animals?
The value of the plant food in man
ures is not as great as the humus
they afford that stimulates bacterial
action and thus seta free the natural
plant food contained in the soil. The
value of manures per animal for a
Jraar is estimated as follows: Horse
tor mule, $27; cow, S2O; hog, $;
Sheep, $2.

PEACH SPRAYING SCHEDULE.
T. H. McHatton, Professor of
Horticulture.
Inquiry—What schedule would you
recommend for spraying peaches?
To combat San Jose scale. Plum
Curculio, Leaf Curl, Scab and Brown
Rot, use lime-sulphur solution in fall
and spring if trees are badly infested
with scale. In spring only, for slight
infestation. Use self-boiled lime-sul
phur solution and arsenate of lead as
soon as the shucks have fallen from
the young little peaches. Follow two
weeks later with an application of
self-boiled lime-sulphur and arsenate
of lead. Use self-boiled lime sulphur
alone, four weeks before fruit ripens.
Inquiry—What schedule for spray
ing do you use for applies?
1. Use lime-sulphur fall and spring
if badly infested. 2. Use lime-sulphur
solution (summer strength) or Bor
deaux mixture (3-5-50) with two
pounds of arsenate of lead just before
blossom opens. (This may be omit
ted if lime-sulphur spray is used in
spring for San Jose scale). 3. Use
lime-sulphur solution or Bordeaux
mixture with arsenate of lead soon
as petals have fallen. 4. Use same
as “2” four weeks after petals have
fallen. 5. Use Bordeaux mixture and
arsenate of lead 8 to 9 weeks after
petals have fallen. 6. Use Bordeaux
mixture alone two weeks later. 7.
Use Bordeaux mixture again two
weeks after “6.”

“ BUT!”
This adversative conjunction one
day was hailed to court,
And there was made to answer for
much malicious sport.
There, at the Bar o, Conscience, it
seems well understood.
This word stands charged with
voicing the malice of the good.
When demons Spite and Envy en
trap the unwary wise,
This little world affords them their
handiest disguise,
“For ’tis a thoughtful word to use—
discriminating quite,
And surely careful thinking cannot
bo aught but right.”
And thus the best among us—our
men ef earnest thought,—
Are bribed (o subtle evil which this
little word lias wrought.
We often hear it said, “The sermon
was a good one, Yes!
But, oil, how long drawn out —we
could get on with less!”
‘•He’s brilliant but—erratic“ Good.
but,, —my, how dull!”
“He’s risen fast, I know, but—then
be had a pull.”
•He’s scholarly, but, —cold,” and
bright, but,—commonplace;”
■‘He’s safe and sane and strong,
but,—totally without grace!”
“A good administrator, but,—can’t
preach nary lick.”
“He’s kept his place, but,—say, how
did lie turn the trick?”
Adversative conjunction ! How fit
ting is thy name,
I’hy single syllable perverting praise
to blame;
Adverse, indeed, thou art, when
Spite would slyly damn,
And. in a Beeming compliment, n
double curse would cram!
