THE FAMOUS LAFAYETTE ROAD
To Be Put in Fine Condi
tion for Autoists During
Confederate Reunion at
Chattanooga.
Chattanooga, Tenn., Apr. 3
The most historic road in the en
virons ef Chickamauga park is the
LaFayette road, which at the time
of the battle of Chickamauga was a
public highway leading from Chatta
nooga to LaFayette, Ga. The con
tending armies fought back and
forth across this load, and the ilame
of battle was so destructive that the
road became the “bloody lane” of
the field. LaFayette road lias been
put in fine condition by tlie govern
ment so that touring cars run over
it at a high rate of speed. It is 0116
of the best drives in the south.
The first day’s fighting at Chicka
maugaended with the forces still
contending for LaFayette road, the
confederates driving west in an
effort to break tiie federal lines. The
scene there as darkness settled down
over the field is the most meloncholy
picture of Chickamauga. 1 11 the
course of his magnificent chapter on
Chickamauga, Gen. John B. Gordon
thus describes it: ttk
“Gradually the mighty wrestlers
grew weary and fapit, and silence
reigned again in the shell-shivered
forest. It was, however, only a lull
in tiie storm. On the extreme union
left tiie restless confederates were
again moving into line fora last and
tremendous effort. The curtain oi
night slowly descended, and the
powder-blackened bayonets and
flags over the hostile lines were but
dimly seen in the dusky twilight
Wearily the battered ranks in gray
moved again through the bnllei
scarred woods, over the ilead bodie*
of their brothers who fell in the earl}
hours and whose pale faces told tin
living of coining fate. Nature mer
cifully refused to lend her light t<
guide the unyielding armies to furth
er slaughter. But the blazing muz
zles of the rifles became their guides.
hiul the first hour of darkness wai
hideous by resounding small a rim
and their lurid flashes.
“To the two armies whose blood
still flowed long after Ihe sun went
down on the 19th, neither of then,
victorious, but eacli so near theotln
eras to bear the groans of he wounc
ed and dying in the opposing rank*,
ihe scene was indescribably op
pressive. All over the field lay tin
unburied dead, their pale faces mad*
ghastlier by streaks of blood anr
clotted hair, and black stains < f
powder left upon their lips wliei
they tore off with their teetli ends of
deadly cartridges. Such was tin
night between the 19th and 20th if
September at Chickamauga.”
/ s already explained, the scene*
were along the LaFayette road,
back and across which the forcei
had contended all day. It Is doubt
fill it there is a bloodier lane in tin
world, The points of the most des
perate struggles along the LaFay
ette road have been marked by tin
government, and any soldier win
fought at Chickamauga can easiij
locale the position of his regiment
or company, by aid of these marker*
and historical tablets.
It is psedicted that there will b*
more than 1000 soldiers at the com
ing reunion May 27-29 who were ii
that greatest of all battles. If so, t
reunion of these survivors will b*
arranged for some place along tin
LaFayette road during reunion week

FRAIL, SICKLY CHILD
Restored to Health by Vinol— 1
Letter to Mothers.
Anxious mothers often wonder why
their children are so pale, thin and
nervous and have so little appetite.
For the benefit of such mothers ia
this vicinity we publish the following
letter.
J. Edmund Miller, New Haven,
Conn., says: “My little daughter, even
since her birth, had been frail and
sickly, and was a constant source of
worriment. Several months ago wa
commenced to give her Vinol. I im
mediately noted an improvement In
her health and appearance. I gave
her three bottles of Vinol, and from
the good it has done her I can truly
say it will do all you claim.”
This child’s recovery was due to
the combined action of the medicinal
elements extracted from cods’ livers,
—combined with the blood-making
and strength-creating properties of
tonic iron, which are contained In
Vinol.
Vinol will build up and strengthen
delicate children, old people and the
weak, run-down and debilitated. W 6
return the money In every case where
it fails.
