MY LITTLE BOY HAS 60HE AM/

My little boy has g • ••: •• v ,-
The house is still and r >
The silent toys, they look a' rr.--.
With melancholy mein.
11.
The kindlings in the kindling pile.
They do not move about.
Becoming wondrous railroad tracks
A-twisting in and out.
111.
I walk across the level yard
Atid stumble not at all,
Because I find, along my path,
No one has dug a hole.
IV.
The bath-room, once a soggy place,
With rubber toys afloat,
Has now become a tidy spot
Where grown-ups calmly gloat.
V.
Aud when, at night, I go to bed,
The sheets feel smooth and cool,
Beneath my pillow nothing lurks—
No lop, nor ball, nor spool.
VI.
And when, at last, I fall asleep,
No hand upon my neck,
I think how different all will be
When my little boy comes back.
