Webster says science is: Knowledge; knowledge of principles or facts. Many farmers have a disposition to sneer at science in farming. They imagine science to be a subtle theory introduced by college professors to dazzle and impress man with their su periority, but altogether senseless and therefore useless. But science is nothing more than knowledge—to know, not to guess or theorize. It means proof of princi ples and facts. Science in farming is to know the soil; how the air and moisture and fertilized work upon it; how seed are formed, grow and ripen. Science is to know- when to plow and sow and reap; how to make every step and every swing of the arms count for something; how- to save and prevent waste and how to increase the yield of seed and animals at the least expense. Science means just every day horse sense applied to every-day affairs. It is to think and know and find out about things by one’s own experience or by the experience of others. To Kill Lice on Roses. The lice on your rose plants can be gotten rid of. Dip the bush in water slightly warmer than the "hand will bear, repeating the treatment sev eral times at intervals of a day or two. Dusting thoroughly with tobacco powder will also be effectual. The white and green lice, which at tack the tender rose plants early In the spring may be destroyed by hot suds from the Monday’s wash.
