One hiiiik in South (tcorgia wriles die Southern States Cotton Corpo
ral ion dial il does not believe in hoidinir cotton, nixl will not permit the
burner to bold it il it ear: help it, beiie> jug that ‘die should take what is in
sight.” Kariy in August some farmers reported to this corporation that
t bev had sold their cotton for October delivery at 10.55 c per pound. It is
presumed these fanners were acting upon the advice of this bank and
“taking what was in sight.” Mow does this bank’s attitude of forcing
the farmer to veil look in the light, of J.'k- cotton? is it really good to
“take what is in sight,” or would the farmer ba\e profited by holding his
cotton ?
I he fanner is not alone responsible fox’ glutting and mining the mar
ket and selling all of his cotton in three months. There is a system around
the farmer that is choking him to death, and when this Corporation pro
poses to interfere with that system by protecting the farmer and getting
him a fair price for his cotton, there is n big hurrah and denunciation
from the interests that think they are going to tie interfered with. Many
farmers go to these very people who are bleeding him t,o death find ask
their advice. They tell him to stay out of the Corporation—that it is
dangerous. Read the following, and see why this advice is given so
freely: ,*.<,■.„.< . . , v .
On Sept. 11, 1913. middling cotton wus stiiing in Liverpool for 15.02 c
per pound. This is $75.10 per bale.
In Macon that day this same cotton brought only 12 1 2c per pound, or
$62.50 per bale.
This is a difference of $12.60 per bale.
The freight and insurance tc Liverpool is $4 per'bale.
What become of the other $8.60?
'I he truth is, the farmer lias something which is valuable, but does not
know how to got the value of it. Tne middlemen get that $8.60, besides t:n
dergrading and taie, amounting to $2 to $5 note, per bale.
