ONE-PAPER TOWNS
It is by no means usual for
some hopeful newspaper man to
establish in a “one paper” town
which already has a successful
daily or weekly as the case may
be, a rival publication, and about
once in a hundred times the new
comer drives theold paper out and
occupies the field alone. No one
paper town can support two pa
pers. One or the other , must go to
the wall sooner or later, unless
the one that fights the losing bat
tle is backed by somebody with a
well-filled monev barrel.
The “spite paper” in the coun
try town or small city is far more
common than “spite fences” or
“spite walls” in our big centers
of population. A local clique or
faction, or it may be, a single in
dividual, is offended by some
statement made by the local pa
per or some policy for which it
stands. Anew paper is launch
ed for the avowed purpose of
driving the established one out
of business, and about once in a
hundred times it succeeds. Fre
quently local politics is responsible
for anew paper, which is estab
lished solely for the purpose of
giving some political faction an
organ. *
Discussing these things in con
nection with the recent establish
ment of anew paper at Eastman,
the Rochelle New Era says:
“Local politics is almost with
out exception the cause of a sec
ond newspaper being established
in a small town. We happen to
know that this is the case at East
man. Methvin has always got
ten out about as good a weekly
newspaper as there is in the state
and the paper is really a credit
to the town and county, but
friend Claude has had political
aspirations and—there you are.
“Albany, Valdosta and Moul
trie are three large towns that
have but one newspaper each,
and they are all financial succes
ses. They are live and up
to-date and those towns are proud
of them to that extent that thev
would not even think of giving
encouragement to competition.
“A newspaper man can drop
into any average small one-news
paper town and get all kinds of
TONGUE encouragement to start
another paper. And then, as a
rule, they will give him a nice
advertising patronage for a few
issues, and then —they will let
him slowlv starve to death.
“Not trying to discourage you,
Brother Perry, but rather to en
courage you to take up well-dig
ging or snake-charming on the
side.”—Albany Herald.

3. By increasing the profits of

4. Bv increasing the profits of
farming, the sales and profits of
every other line of business are
increased.
5. There is not a single coun
ty in the United Stfctes where
the farmers could not increase
their profits by better farming
and better business and market
ing methods which can be ob
tained only by the co-operation
of all business interests, and es
pecially the bankers.
6. The greatest efficiency in
farming is found where business
men co-operate actively with the
farmers.
7. Live stock and all its by

instances more profitable than
the open market.
8. Co-operation is the keynote
of modern progress. It is the

There is another meeting of
the Cotton States Conference to
be held in New Orleans perhaps
some time in December. Among
other things their purpose is to
suggest and deyise plans by which
the maturity date of the farmers
paper will not all come at one
time in the fall. This is looking
ahead and planning for the fu
ture.
I mention all this above, in or
der to give you a perspective of
what is in contemplation. There
is no doubt but that the entire
banking system is going to un
dergo a revolution and is now un
dergoing it in a much greater
way than we can see.
The president of the Texas
Bankers’ Association, Mr. Joseph
Hirsch, of Corpus Christi, is wri
ting to suggest that we, in our
state, have special called Group
meetings for the purpose of dis
cussing the situation of gradually
marketing the crop and making
such other and additional plans
looking to the benefit and encour
agement of our farmers and push
ing the “diversification” idea all
we possibly can. The slogan in
Texas is “Texas Must Feed Her
self.”
There is no doubt each banker
in his community has an influence
and can be the exponent and
leader in anything which will
mean for the betterment of his
community and personally I be
lieve that the bankers have a
higher duty to perform to their
community than that of making
money for their share holders.
This suggestion of calling a
special meeting of your Group, I
leave entirely to your own dis
cretion and would like to know
what you think of it and if you
are in sympathy with the plans
herein outlined.
Yours very truly,
F. S. Etheridge, Pres.
Georgia Bankers’ Ass’n.
