Memorial Day to be Observed
■fey Daughters of the Confed
eracy.
At the meeting of the Larkin
D. Watson chapter, U. D. C., at
the home of Mrs. Park' Newton,
Wednesday of the past week all
plans for observing Memorial Day
were perfected and the chapter
expects the day to prove one of
genuine pleasure for the Confed
erate Veterans all of whom are
earnestly requested to be present.
The Jackson Rifles, under the
command of Capt. H. D. Russell,
will take an active part in the
morning's exercises and Hon. W.
C. Wright, of Newnan, Ga., an
able and eloquent orator, will pay
tribute to the heroes of the lost
cause in his address in the court
room at eleven o’clock. At the
close of the exercises a sumptuous
spread will be awaiting the veter
ans and Jackson Rifles in the hall
of the courthouse.
The members of the Larkin D.
Watson chapter will serve the
dinner and any donations from
friends who have, heretofore so
generously contributed to the
success of the day will be grate
fully accepted.
D. A. R. Meeting
A called meeting of the D. A.
R. chapter was held Wednesday
morning at the home of the Re
gent, Mrs. J. P. Etheridge. The
gift of the Varner house from
Miss Joe Varner was formally ac
cepted and a committee was ap
pointed to thank Miss Varner on
behalf of the chapter. The old
Varner home and one acre of
ground was given to the William
Mclntosh chapter and its suc
cessors for “love, patriotism and
one dollar,” which amount serves
to make the deed valid. It will
be known as the "Varner-Meln
tosh Memorial” and the chapter
members will take keen interest
and pride in its upkeep. It will
be fitted up right away with
sleeping apartments, which will
be rented to summer boarders.
In this way it is hoped to make
some money which will be used
for repairs, etc.
Miss Varner was unanimously
elected an honorary member.
The gold medal offered by the
chapter for the best essay was
won by “Miss Sallie Samantha
Salt” and the chapter invites her
to read her essay at the May
meeting.
