Stores Will Take Half Wednesday Holiday We, the undersigned, hereby agree to close our respective places of business on each Wednesday afternoon beginning at 1 p. m., embracing the months of June, July and August, 1916, namely, from Wednesday, June 7, to Wednesday, August 30. In taking this action we realize that the interests of the farmers, business men and their employees is all one and we respectfully ask for the co-operation of all concerned in making this plan a success: (SIGNED.) Thornton What Prominent Citizens Say About It News has come to me that the merchants and business men in general of our town have agreed to take for themselves and give to their employees every Wed nesday afternoon from June the first to August thirty-first as a half holiday. I take this means to express my appreciation of the movement. I fully endorse it and commend the business men for their thoughtfulness for the following reasons: 1. No one will lose by it and every one will gain by it This it a good business proposition. 2. The d&ys during these sum mer months are the longest and dullest of the year and these proprietors and clerks ought not to be kept in doors such long hours. They need more of God’s fresh air and sunshine for health’s sake. 3. These indoor workers stay up late Saturday night, anyway. It may be they ought not to do it; but we buyers possibly have driven them to it. Let these in door workers have Wednesday afternoons as a time of recreation if we are going to demand that they work till late Saturday nights 4. Laziness is a deplorable sin we will all admit; but is not work to the point of injuring health a sin too? Let us not be lazy, nor let us kill ourselves at work. 5. Again, some of these indoor workers, if they had been care free in the afternoon, might be found in our churches in the eve ning at the mid-week worship. I hardly judge it would do one of them harm to spend an hour in worship. For these reasons and others I endorse the Wednesday half hol iday movement. Respectfully, Olin King. lam heartily in favor of the weekly half holiday plan. Hugh Mallet. C. S. S. J. A. Joyner J. S. Johnson Cos. The Racket Store McKibben Buggy Cos. J. C. Kinard & Cos. It shows a progressive spirit besides giving the salespeople a rest from their toil. It has my hearty en dorsement. R. VanDeventer. I think it an excellent idea. It must be as it has proved so popu lar in so many other places. It shows progress, to say the least of it. Mrs. W. 0. Ham. Pres. Mother’s Club. v We can see no good reason why the movement looking to the closing of the business houses for one half day each week through the summer season, should not be adopted by the houses of this city. In justice to the employees of the various concerns, they should be given at least one half holiday for the time contempla ted in the movement. H. D. Russell. Captain Jackson Rifles. I think the plan grand; every man needs recreation. It’s in line with modern educational thought. W. P. Martin, Supt. Jackson Public Schools. The working man needs sum mer recreation and rest. Wednes day is quiet as a business day and the plan to close all stores at 1 p. m. should meet the approval of both customers and merchants. A. J. Fleming, Prin. Jenkinsburg High School. This is a day of progression and requires a clear, accurate mind to transact business suc cessfully and I think the Jackson business men have taken a wise step in taking a half holiday in which to rest. Maddox says: “This is a good thing for all of us. Anybody can buy every thing he needs in 5i days. ‘ 'You clerks ought to be in good humor now.” Mrs. J. B. Settle. President Civic League, says: ‘ ‘As always, we Civic Leaguers are heartily in favor of any move ment for the public good. “This plan of half holiday on Wednesday afternoon is a splend id movement and we heartily en dorse it. “It is progressive and in line with the rest of the wide-a-wake world and we want to be progres sive.” To encourage good labor is to show them some consideration. J. T. Moore, Mayor. I am heartily in favor of the movement. It gives all business men half holiday that they may use as they desire. S. J. Foster. I think the plan a good one and would like to see all business houses closed from 1 p. m. on Wednesdays. L. M. Crawford. I indorse the move to give the people who are confined all the week to have one half day in the week an outing. J. H.
