Replying to your telegram will say that it is the custom of our mer chants to close their stores on Thurs day at noon during the summer months, giving their employees half holiday each week. No loss is sus tained by the merchants and em ployees appreciate and deserve the recreation. The custom is a decided success. W. J. Vereen, Mayor. * Of course the clerks ought to have a rest one half each Wednesday dur ing the summer. I see that other towns are closing for a half day in the week during the summer and we all knew that Jackson would be in the front with the best of them. That is why we love to trade in your hustling little town—you are up with the times. Albert M. Garr. I think the Wednesday afternoon closing plan a good one. I don't see why all of us cannot do our trading in 6J days during the dull summer months.' If this rest will be a boon for the clerks, and they seem to want it, I think we ought to show this consideration for them. This pro gressive action will advertise our* section and put us on the map with other wide-awake communities. J. E. McMichael. Y'ou clerks and business men of Jackson are always up-to-date and we all are proud of our town. I think this half holiday for Wednes day afternoons is a step in the right direction. We are with you in all progressive movements. W. C. Garr. The closing of the stores is a good thing. lam glad to see them close. H. M. Fletcher. r Atlanta, Ga., May 25, 1916 Mr. R. N. Etheridge, Jackson, Ga. Dear Bob:—1 have yours of the 24th inst. In answer thereto wish to say that I have not definitely decided the date I will go to St. Louis and Chicago “Bargain Hunting” for my usual big summer sales, but I will notify you in ample time and I want you to be sure to join me. We can make it interesting for our trrde. I am sure they look and wait for it. I am glad to know that your trade is fine and that you bought your goods for fall at old prices. You are cer tainly in good shape, because on ev ery side I hear that prices will be much higher. By the way, I notice from The Progress-Argus that Jackson is still in the progressive column and right up to date, having a half holiday Wednesday. This is the custom in many places in Georgia and all of Florida. It’s timely, wise and pro gressive and I want to congratulate the broad view of thing you business men are taking. I am specially proud of Jackson and feel interested in every move for good, as I still claim it as my home town. Stodghill, Crawford Cos. Jackson Banking Cos. Leverette Barber Shop L. H. I will very likely go to New York by Savannah steamer this summer. Plan to go that way, too. Drop in tosee me when in the city. Always glad to see you. * Yours very truly, W. H. Higgins. This Wednesday half holiday is good. If the clerks want some re creation, they ought to have it for we all are interested in each other’s welfare. T. J. Hammond. I want to express myself regard ing the half Wednesday holiday adopted by the merchants and bus iness men of Jackson. I think it the best indication of prosperous good times and shows a broad, lib eral spirit, wise, practical and pro gressive. I can specially appreciate what it means to the employees, having worked in stores during summer. It means better health andservice. Banks, post and express offices, schools and farmers have hol idays and why not clerks? I hope that the public generally will sym pathize, appreciate and co-operate with this grand movement. Mrs. Mary E. Butner. I think any one in town can trade when he wants to and that the half holiday Wednesday afternoon will not inconvenience him during the summer months; if the movement is advertised, no one in the country will suffer and then the clerks will have the recreation that they need. Therefore, 1 think theplan is a good one. Ben F. Maddox.
