JUDGE SEARCY CONVENES COURT Delivered Able Charge to Grand Jury COURT DO WNTO BUSINESS Civil Business First to Be Considered —Mr. I. H. Maddox Foreman of The Grand Jury The midsummer term of Butts county superior court was con vened here Monday morning by Judge Wra. E. H. Searcy, Jr., of Griffin, and Solicitor General E. M. Owen was present to rep resent the State. Almost 34 horse-power from this reg ular stock Maxwell engine! 34 actual , brake horse-power! Proved by an accurate dynamometer test, made in the Maxwell laboratories August 10, 1916. A giant has no advantage if he does not In his usual able manner Judge Searcy delivered a forceful charge to the grand pointed out the duties of the grand jury in helping to force the laws of the state, particular stress being laid on the prohibition law, law against carrying concealed weap ons and gambling. The grand jury was organized by electing Mr. I. H. Maddox as foreman, and Mr. J. B. Settle clerk. Mr. M. L. Duke was chosen as bailiff. Following the charge of Judge Searcy the court took up the con sideration of civil business, which engaged the time the first two or three days. Later in the week criminal matters were called for a hearing. Verdicts were returned in the following civil matters: Buttrill Bros, vs S. H. Mays, verdict for plaintiff. Buttrill Bros, vs J. 0. Gaston, verdict for plaintiff. Joe Holloway vs Butts county, suit for SIO,OOO damages, verdict for defendant. Criminal cases were taken up Wednesday morning, the case of the State against Oscar Willis, charged with murder, being the first case tried. The jury found the defendant guilty of man slaughter and Judge Searcy sen tenced him to twelve years. The following visiting attor neys attended court during the week: Messrs. E. M. Smith and E. J.
