LARGEENROLLMENT IN CITY SCHOOLS Fall Term Opened Monday Most Auspiciously ENTHUSIASM IS EVIDENT Mr. J. H. Carmichael, Pres ident Board of Education Makes Plea For Better Educational Facilities The fall term of the Jackson public schools began Monday un der the most favorable conditions and all indications point to a b n ner year. More enthusiasm was evident than has been witnessed i before in years, showing that the citizens of the community are I thoroughly awake on the question j of education. A large number of natrons and friends of the school were pres- J. C. JONES—THE MAN Jess Jones is winner. He lias always been a winner. It has come to be a habit with him. He has been a winner since he, left an orphan by the fortune of war, worked as a wage hand at a salary of $6.00 per month. He had as fierce a struggle with poverty as was ever fought, but he has risen from one success to another until today he is one of Hutts co inty’s most successful busi ness men. But he is the same Jess Jones still, one of the common people, know ing their struggles, their tria's, their joys, their sweets and their sorrows. Rising himself from a wage earner to a man of atlairs, Jess Jones appreci ates the position of the poor man, the common man, the everyday man. He is their friend. He showed that in the dark days of 1914 and 1915 when the Kuropean war knocked the bottom out of the cotton market and panic and disaster faced the country and particularly the cotton farmer. In 1914, when cotton was 6 and 7 cents a |>ound, we find his firm giving, 10 CENTS. In 1916 when the fleecy staple was 8 and Scents a pound we find Mr. Jones advertising in the public prints that he would pay IS CENTS for cotton That was patriot ism of a fine order. That was love for a man’s fellow countrymen that counts. Jess Jones is a broad-minded, public-spirited, far-seeing, patriotic citizen. He believes in education, a thing that was denied him when the South, crush ed and bleeding, was eating crusts. Rut his fund of common, practical sense stamps him as a leader. He believes in giving every Anglo-Saxon child in Butts oounty a thorough education, preparing them for the struggle of life and twentieth century competition. Jess Jones made Jackson one of the best Alderman that ever served thecity. A few years back when the city’s finances were in wretched condition and the town didn’t have the credit to buy an ounce of coal, Jess Jones was elected as an Alderman. He was made chairman of the Finance Committee and his busi ness acumen helped build up the city’s credit, he helped to make a contract for cheap electric power, helped to reduce the cost of lights and power to a mini mum. He didn’t do all of these things by himself, but he HELPED. And that was SERVICE. Jess Jones is a com in unity builder, a town aud'county booster. He has never refused to help in'any worthy movement meant for a Greater Jackson and a Greater Butts County. He does not glorify the dollar above PATRIOT IBM, nor pelf above the COMMON WEAL. He has not lived to himself sel fishly, but has opened his heart and his purse and has worked, boosted, pull ed, plead for the best things in life for his town and county. His reward is the affectionate regard of his fellow citizens, and £ better, cleaner, higher order of things worth while. He believes in AngWeßaxon supremacy, that this is a white man’s coun try and that our own while people are capable of working out their own desti ny in their own way. Had you ever thought of that? Jess Jones is a golden hearted gentleman. He never betrayed a public trust or turned bis back on a friend. As true as the needle to the North Star, •8 true is Jess Jones to his friends and the cause of Justice, Liberty, Truth and Right. He is incapable by nature of doing little, spiteful, dirty, jealous things. He is a man the people of Butts county can trust implicitly. Their interests will be safe in his hands. You always know where to find Jess Jones. As he has worked at home in season and out of season, so will he work in the Legis lature for everything that is best for Butts county and her citizens. A vote for this big hearted, plain, practical, progressive business man is a vote for Butts county and her best interests. It was P. T. Barnum of circus fame, that said the American people love to be humbugged. Some i>olitieinns pitch their campaigns on that basis. It was honest old Abe Lincoln that said you cannot FOOL ALLthe people ALL THE TIME. Though the waters have been muddy, though the issues have oeen oloudv, though strife has been aroused, though passion and prejudice has been appealed to, though classes have been arrayed against classes, the sun light is breaking through. The people are learning the TRUTH and false is sues and fake platforms are becoming known. When you come to vote apply the deadly parallel. Put the candidates in the crucible, and s,s? who will come out J 4 karat gold. Weigh them in the balance; study their pa.t lives; weigh their public service: analyze their characters; hold their lives as they have lived them among you up to the light; apply the great white light of pitiless publicity to their acts and doings. Remember, Mr. Voter, that your ballot isn't a selfish thing. It is Butts county that you are voting for: it is the people’s welfare that is at stake. Vote for a man that is tried and true, that is all gold, that is the soul of honor, principle, character. , Jess Jones is one of Nature’s noblemen. He stands for something. Read his platform: PLATFORM: 1. I.ft the Prohibition law stand as itas. Rigid enforcement of this and all other laws. 2. Three County Commissioners, .it a combined salary not to exceed SI,OOO per year. i. let County Treasurer's salary stand as fixed by ISIS General Assembly, viz: s7?#. 4. Peace and harmony in county affairs. S Development of our educational facilities. V. A bigger, better, more prosperous Butts county. ADVERTISEMENT ent at the opening. The invoca tion was said by Rev. I. H. Mil ler of the Presbyterian church. ,Pi of. W. P. Martin made a talk outlining the work for the com ing year. Mr. J. H. Carmichael, p-esident of the Board of Educa tion, made an enthusiastic ad dress, making a plea for a united support for the town’s educa tional interests. He pointed out that Jackson’s greatest need is a new and modern school building. This must come before the city can attain its proper sphere in the educational world, said Mr. Carmichael. The enrollment the first day was large, totaling 417. Others will enter during the next few days and anew record of atten dance is expected this session. The enrollment is fifty more than for the same time last year. The senior class has 35 mem bers, a record for Jackson and without doubt one of the largest in the state outside of a boarding school.
