WHITE MAN AND RED MAN
The Indian Excells in His Ability to
Care for Himself in the
Wilderness.
The statement that two or three
white men entered the Maine woods
“in a state of nature” to see if they
could work out their own salvation
in the matter of securing a living with
their bare hands, calls attention to
what the Indian can accomplish in this
line. For however resourceful the
white man may be, the Indian has
never been excelled in the matter of
taking care of himself in the wilder
ness.
It has been but a little while since
the Toledo Blade told of an Indian
who became separated from his fel
lows, away up in the Hudson bay coun
try. He had no food, no protection
against the weather, except a ragged
suit of clothes and a pocket knife was
his only weapon or implement. But
he emerged from the wilderness next
spring, fat, happy and in possession of
several hundred dollars’ worth of furs.
He managed to start a fire with his
knife and a piece of flint, the Blade
says. lie erected a shelter which
turned snow and ice. With strips of
bark he made fish lines, with thorns,
books. Fish he found in plenty by
breaking holes through the ice of the
streams. He fashioned traps and es
tablished a line of them. He made
snow shoes, fur clothing, moccasius
and a great cap he spoke of as a stove
AVhen spring arrived this Indian had
a canoe and be rode away on the first
freshet with his store of wealth, in bet
ter physical condition than he was
when he parted from his friends. But
he didn’t suppose there was anything
unusual in the accomplishment. He
accepted his success as a matter of
fact, and will probably return to the
scene to duplicate the adventure as
the easiest way of making a living.

War Trophies on Display.
Unusual interest attaches to the re
cent celebration in Petrograd of St.
George’s day, owing to the display of
war trophies. Service was held in the
churches as well as before the monu
ment to Peter the Great, which was
surrounded by a cordon of officers and
men, Knights of the Order of St.
George. The service was attended by
the cabinet ministers and the diplo
matic corps. It was followed by the
opening of the floating exhibition of
Russian trophies of the present war
which has been organized on the Neva.
The exhibition is housed in an enor
mous boat painted in yellow and black,
the colors of the Order of St. George,
and comprises a variety of objects,
from huge field guns to explosive bul
lets. After the Petrograd public has
had ample opportunity of visiting the
exhibition ship, it will sail down the
Volga, halting at all the towns and
villages on Its banks.
