THE MUNICIPAL CHRISTMAS.
Had Its Origin In Germany and Is
Spreading Here Rapidly.
The celebration of the “community
Christmas” in this country originated
In n dinner table conversation of a
group of arllsls in New York in 1912.
One of (he group, a young man who
had Just returned from study in Cer
many, was enthusiastic over the com
munity festivals there, and the trails
planting of (he celebration to the
United States had its birth at that
time. The first community Christmas
tree in this country was the Madison
square "Tree of Light" in 1912. Vari
ous factors in the life of New York as
a community contributed to the ar
rangement and financing of the tree.
Since then the custom hns spread to
hundreds of cities, towns and villages,
which have adapted the idea to their
particular needs nnd circumstances
and plan to make it a permanent es
tablishment. The custom has existed
In Germany for many years, is in fact
an old German tradition nnd "fest.”
Specific Information as to “what to do
and how to do It" in planning and or
ganizing a community festival may be
obtained by addressing “The Tree of
Light,” Postofflce Station G, New York

Delights of Christmas
An Ancient Poem
When Christmas approaches each
bosom is gay,
That festival banishes sorrow away,
While Richard he kisses both Susan
and Dolly
When tricking the house up with
ivy and holly,
For never as yet it was counted a
crime
To Le merry and cherry at that hap
py time.
Then come turkey and chine, with
the famous roast beef,
Of English provisions still reckoned
the chief.
Roger wishes the cook maid his
wishes to crown,
“Oh, Dolly, pray give me a bit of
the brown!”
For never as yet it was counted a
crime
To be merry and cherry at that hap
py time.
The luscious plum pudding does
smoking appear,
And the charming mince pie is not
far from the rear.
Then each licks his chops to behold
such a sight,
For to taste it affords him superior
delight,
For never as yet it was counted a
crime
To be merry and cherry at that hap
py time.
Now the humming October goes
merrily round,
And each with good humor is hap
pily crowned.
The song and the dance and the
mirth giving jest,
Alike without harm by each one is
expressed.
For never as yet it was counted a
crime
To be merry and cherry at that hap
py time.
Twelfth day next approaches to give
you delight,
And the sugared rich cake is dis
played to the sight;
The man and the maid and the
king and the queen
Alike must be present to add to the
scene, >
For never as yet it was counted a
crime
To be merry and cherry at that hap
py time.
May each be found thus as the year
circles round,
With mirth and good humor each
Christmas be crowned,
And may all who have plenty of
riches in store
With their bountiful blessings make
happy the poor,
For never as yet it was counted a
crime
To be merry and cherry at that hap
py time.

Early Christmas Plays.
Two of the earliest Christmas plays
that have come down to us are to be
found in the few fragmentary works
of Hllarlus, a monk of the twelfth cen
tury, who Is said to have been an
Englishman and who Is known to have
been a pupil of the monk Abelard. Of
the three mystery plays which he Is
thought to have written In collabora
tion with Jordanus and Simon, prob
ably brother monks, two were evident
ly played during the Christmas season
—namely, “The Image of St Nicho
las,” most likely produced on that
saint’s day, Dec. 6. and “The History
of Daniel,” which seems to have been
