The Christmas Peal
By HARRIET PRESCOTT SPOFFORD
SWINGING across the belfry
tower
The bells rang backward all the
hour.
They rang, they reeled, they rushed,
they roared;
Their tongues tumultuous mu-ii
poured.
The old walls rocked; the peals out
swept;
Far up the steep their echoes leaped,
Soaring and sparkling till they
burst
Like bubbtes round the topmost horn
That reddens to the hint of morn,
•That halts some trembling star the
first,
And all the realms' of ice and frost
From field to field those joy bell;
tossed.
They answered from their airy
height;
They thrilled f they loosed their
bands for flight;
They knew that it was Christmas
is . ht.
Where awful absences of sound
The gorge in death's dumb rigor
bound,
Below and deep within the wood.
Windless and weird the black pines
stood.
The iron boughs slow swaying rose
And fell and shook their sifted
snows
And stirred in every stem and
branch
To the wild music in the air
From far lone upper regions where
Loose plunged the silver avalanche.
All up and down the valley side
These iron boughs swayed far- and
wide.

You who with quickening throbs
shall mark
Such swells and falls swim on the
dark
As crisp as if the clustered rout
In starry depths sprang chiming
out,
A3 if the Pleiades should sing,
Lyra should touch her tenderest
string,
Aldebaran liis spear heads clang,
Great Betelgeusc and Sirius blow
Their mighty lionm and Fomalhaut
With wild sweet breath suspended
hang,
Know 'tis your heartbeats with
these bells,
Loosen the snow clouds’ vibrant
cells.
Stir the vast forest on the height,
Your heartbeats answering to the
light
Flashed earthward the first Christ
mas night.

MAKING Christmas happy for
the poor, the lonely, rich,
those who have no family
ties to bind them close to the
great heart of humanity at Christ*
mastide,is the mission of the mu*
nicipal or city Christmas. Even
many small towns havewelcom
ed the idea, and men and women,
touched by the gentle spirit of
Christmas, coin each year in the
effort to make Christmas a reality
for all. The community Christ*
mas does not supplant the pri*
vate celebration. It adds zest to
the family gatherings and the in*
dividual rejoicings. And it brings
the joy and the thrill of the day
to many to whom it would be
unknown otherwise.
How some American cities celebrat
ed the community Christmas in past
years may be read here:
Indianapolis, Ind.—Thousands of In
diana residents began in many ways
to take the Christmas spirit to their
less fortunate neighbors. Municipal
trees became a leading feature in the
celebration. From some of the trees
presents were distributed, while at oth
ers large choruses sang Christmas
carols. Newspapers throughout the
state provided toys for the children
A Community Christmas Tree
and Christmas dinners for the poor, and
they were* assisted by charitable or
ganizations.
Columbus, o.—Thousands of resi
dents in many Ohio cities celebrated
their first municipal Christmas eve
with community Christinas trees and
completed preparations for serving
thousands of unfortunates with Christ
mas dinners. Church chimes, boys'
choirs, large choruses and brass bands
furnished music for the municipal cele
brations.
Cleveland, O.—Church bells summon
ing citizens to the public square at 7
o’clock initiated Cleveland's commu
nity Christmas celebration. Thousands
listened while a choir of 300 men and
boys, standing beneath a lighted sixty
five foot Christmas tree, sang carols.
The sale of stock in “Cleveland, the
City of Good Will,” insured that every
one in the city would have a Christ
mas dinnei*.
Cincinnati, O.—Hinging of chimes all
over the city, a fanfare of trumpets,
carols by a selected choir of boys and
a brilliant illumination of the munici
pal Christmas tree ushered in Cincin
nati's public Christmas celebration.
The city Christmas tree, forty-five feet
in height, was illuminated with elec
tric liuhts. There was no attempt to
distribute presents, but the musical
dedication of the tree by singing so
cieties drew a crowd which taxed the
