SIX REASONS
WHY HEREFORD CATTLE
gfWWf** *~mr% xrxmm tar—jnMTMw——■
ARE BEST TO RAISE
IHEREFORDS MAKE THE CHEAPEST BEEF.
• Natural aptitude to fatten is the predominant charac
teristic of the Herefords. The animals upon ■which the
breed "veas founded were selected because they showed this
easy fattening characteristic, a characteristic which has been
carefully developed and unerringly transmitted from genera
tion to generation.
2 HEREFORDS ARE THE BEST GRAZERS. Origi
• nally developed to meet the demand for a medium for
converting the grasses and forage of the West of England
into high-class beef, the Hereford is recognized today, as it
was a century ago, as the premier grazing animal.
3 HEREFORDS MATURE THE EARLIEST. The
• Hereford can be finished and marketed as prime beef
at an earlier age and with a greater weight of carcass than
any other breed. The meat of the Hereford “baby beef
is not veal, but mature beef, but lacking in the excessive fat
of the older animal.

4 HEREFORDS ARE THE HARDIEST BREED.
• Herefords endure extremes of climate and withstand
hardships better than any other breed. They are more
rugged of constitution as a breed, and more active and en
ergetic in the pursuit of a livelihood, and will keep in better
flesh where feed is scarce and difficult to get than any other
breed.
5 ARE THE MOST PROLIFIC AND PREPOTENT.
• Prolificacy is a characteristic that was early fixed in the
Hereford breed. Hereford females are not only prolific
breeders, but are the best of mothers, dropping strong
calves and rearing them well. Prepotency, or the ability to
transmit their characteristics to their offspring when mated
with females of other breeds, is a marked characteristic of
Hereford males.
6 HEREFORDS BRING THE HIGHEST PRICES.
• When finished, both as baby beeves and as mature
beeves, the Herefords command a higher price at the hands
of packers than other breeds. Seventy-five per cent, of the
top sales made at the market centers the past year have
been of cattle showing a preponderance of Hereford blood.

ONE SOW NETS MR. MAYS
$l2B DURING PAST YEAR
Thirty-Two Pigs Were Sold For a
Handsome Price
What amounts to just about a re
cord in the sale of pigs from a single
sow was achieved last year by Mr.
S. H. Mays. He sold 32 pigs for a
total of $l2B.
In Febrdary the sow farrowed 10
piys that were sold for $3 each,
amounting to S3O; in August 12 pigs
were farrowed, being sold at $4 each,
for a total of S4B; and in December
10 pigs were farrowed and were sold
for $5 each, or a total of SSO. The
hog is a money maker and is, of
course, highly prized by the owner.
Mr. Mays states that he now has
11 sows, and at an average of 8 pigs
per hog, he will soon be able to sell
S4OO worth of pigs. Which goes to
show that there is money in raising
hogs.

Gentlemen:
Mr. Will Wachter of this county

of his sick hogs got well and that he
had killed them and now has them in

as fine as any he had killed this year.
I want to add that he said his hogs
were down and so sick that he had to
prize their mouths open and his wife

NO NEWS FROM WASHINGTON
AS TO NEW POST MASTER
Over Four Months Has Elapsed Since
Mr. Slaughter Resigned
A striking example of the red tape
with which all official Washington
seems to be securely bound, is afforded
in the case of the Jackson post mas
tership. Mr. I. J. Slaughter, the in
cumbent, resigned more than four
months ago. On Nov. 14 a competitive
examination was held in Atlanta,
three candidates taking the test.
The appointment, so it was an
nounced would go to the contestant
making the highest general average.
Probably it has not yet dawned on the
post office department just who stood
the highest examination. Asa matter
of fact the appointment is mixed up
with politics. Politics and red tape
together make a great combination.
In the meantime Mr. Slaughter
must serve until his successor is ap
pointed, though he states he would
like very much to be relieved.
