NEWS OF INTEREST IN THE SOCIAL REALM A SOLDIER’S MOTHER (By Lee Shippey) I rive him to his country, with the glow Of youth and lofty purpose on his brow; :,ly heart is aching, yet I know, some how, I should be sadder if he would not go. Think me not hard, you selfish ones and blind, That I can part thus with my darling one. Love him? Yes, just as Mary loved the Son She gave to die, as mine may, for mankind! Lives are not measured by their spans of years, I taught him from his childhood, but great aims; I taught hijn to rfivere tin noble names Of those who died to lessen human tears. And now I keep the faith—my eyes are dry— And though I pray he may come safe through all, If, fighting for humanity, he fall, What—what might he have lived for half so high?
