FIELD PEA CROP IS
AN IMPORTANT ONE
Directions Given for Treatment of
Peas to Curb Weevils
Atlanta, May 23.—0n account of
the extraordinary large supply of
Georgia field peas, the State Depart
ment of Agriculture, through its mar
ket bureau, is seeking to induce far
mers all over the state to properly
treat peas so that they will be free
from the weevil.
In the Bureau’s current market
bulletin attention is called to the fact
that weevil’s in peas can be controlled
by the use of carbon bisulphide, just
the same as is done with the com
weevil. The peas should be placed in
barrels or boxes and the carbon bisul
phide put in a pan or shallow vessel
on top, and then covered w'th a
heavy cloth. The fumes of the bisul
phide will sink through the peas kill
ing the weevils and the eggs. The
process should be repeated in sixty,
days. As carbon bisulphide is quite!
inflammable the same precautions
should be exercised in using it as are
exercised with gasoline. It should not
under any circumstances be exposed
to a flame.
The Department has received much
encouragement in its efforts to popu
larize the Georgia field pea and the
result will undoubtedly be a much'
larger consumption of this wholesome
and valuable food product than ever
before in the history of the state.

BITTER FEELING REIGNS
FOLLOWING KILLING OF FARM
ER AND ATTACK ON HIS WIFE
CITIZENS LYNCH FIVE NE
GROES FOR CRIME
/ Valdosta, May 19.—Mary Turner,
wife of Hayes Turner, was hanged
this afternoon at Folsom’s bridge
over Little River, about sixteen miles
north of Valdosta. Hayes Turner was
hanged at the Okapilco River in
Brooks county last night. His wife, it
is claimed, made unwise remarks to
day about the execution of her hus
band, and the people in their indig
nant mood took exception to her re
marks, as well as her attitude, and!
without waiting for nightfall, took
her to the river where she was hang
ed and her body riddled with bullets.
This makes five persons lynched in
this section as a result of the Smith
tragedy at Barney. All of Sydney
Johnson’s relatives, including his
father and mother, were landed in
jail here last night. Tonight, owing
to the increased feeling among the
people, the jail is being strongly
guarded to prevent trouble. Besides
the c hase after Sydney Johnson,
posses are tonight looking for other
negroes in this section and the feel
ing among the white and black seems
to be growing more intense.
On Thursday night two negroes
stole a shotgun from Hampton Smith
at Barney and shot and killed Smith
in his home. Mrs. Smith fled from the
house and was attacked. She awoke
the following morning in a creek and
went to a negro cabin for aid. Those
who investigated her., story found
Smith’s body and the negroes, farm
hands, had disappeared.
Since then the farming section of
that part of the state has been greatly
aroused.
