ICE DELIVERY
STOPPED HERE
Local Dealers Cannot(Get
Shipments
NO reIiefIFSIGHT YET
SCARCITY Of MATERIALS AND
SAVING OF ICE TO MOVE THE
PEACH CROP RESPONSIBLE
FOR SITUATION
The further reduction in ice, order
ed by state food administrator Soule,
has hit Jackson, and Tuesday no de
liveries were made. Five cent pur
chases of ice could be made at the lo
cal dealers where patrons carried the
ice home. No ice was received here
Tuesday, the order cutting down ship
ments having exhausted the supply of
Atlanta manufacturers.
It is not thought the ice supply will
be normal for several weeks, prob
ably not at all during the summer.
Ice is bein gsaved to help move the
peach crop and under the conditions
there is no relief in sight. Stodg'hill,
Crawford & Cos., local dealers, are
doing all they can to help out, but
when they cannot get ice shipped
from the factories, are of course,
powerless to make deliveries.
There is a scarcity of ammonia,
which is used in large quantities by
the government in making war mu
nitions, and ice manufacturers are
thus prevented fro mmaking their
normal supply of ice. Coal is also
scarce and high and this has crippled
the plants. High priced labor is an
other factor that makes ice higher
than formerly.
Families having wells are using
them to good advantage these days.
But hydrant water without a little
ice is rather an insipid drink.
The present ice shortage is one of
the war conditions that the people
must fac.e Nobody, in particular, is
to blame. People will have to adjust
themselves to conditions and take
what ice they can get and be glad to
get even that.

War Savings Stamps save lives.
Protect your soldiers with your-sav
ings.
Line up and sign up on Natioanl
War Savings Day.
Make every day a thrift day and
help your government end the war
days.
Can you refuse to loan your sav
ings when other men give their lives?
Buy War Savings Stamps.
Do not forget that War Savings
Stamps are not for children only.
Most of the squandering is done by
the grown-ups.
All you are asked to do is to buy
only necessary things.and then loan
—not give—your savings to your
government to help fight your war.
Remember the men in our army
and navy do not expect luxuries.
Should we at home expect them? Buy
necessities and War Savings Stamps.
Give our boys in the army and navy
every fighting chance. Pledge your
self to save to the utmost of your
ability and to buy War Savings
Stamps.
Our men in the trenches and in
the submarine chasers are doing their
part. Are you doing your part? Buy
War Savings Stamps to your utmost
capacity.
When you buy War Savings Stamps
you do not give your money, you loan
it at 4 per cent compounded quarterly
You help your government, but your
self even more.
Your common sense will tell you
that you cannot buy now all the
things you bought before we had a
war to win. Your buying must be
restricted and your savings invested
in War Savings Stamps.
COUGHS AND COLDS VANISH
“Summer colds" are not hard to
break up, coughs and hoarseness are
easy to get rid of, if you will take
Foley’s Honey and Tar Compound.
Mrs. Mary Sogdam, 282 Maple St.,

Telephone Troubles
BELL Telephone employees are con
stantly trying to prevent trouble of any
kind in the workings of the equip
ment, and to repair such troubles as soon
as possible after they occur.
Subscribers are asked to report trouble
Immediately, and to exercise a reasonable
patience while it is being cleared.
If you do not see a man actually
working on your telephone, it does not
mean that you are not receiving proper
attention.
The difficulty may be at the switch
board, in the cable or at any one of sev
eral other places. Two or three men may
be at work hunting it down.
It is always our first consideration to
clear troubles promptly.

A semi-annual dividend of 4 per

institutions have paid a 3 per cent
semi-annual dividend and the increase
of 1 per cent in the dividend shows
thes ebanks to be in a prosperous con
dition. The earnings for the first half
of the year were declared to have
been satisfactory. That these bbanks
are able to make such a good show
ing in the face of war conditions is a
matter of interest to all, reflecting the
prosperous condition of the county.

WHAT WILL WIN THE WAR?
The New York Tribune recently
said editorially that “Victory is a
question of means,” and then it went
on to list the means. These are:
First, the raw materials.
Second, the plants where ravu ma
terials are converted by industrial
processes into sinews of war.
Third, the labor to act upon the
raw materials.
Fourth, the fighting man power in
uniform.
Fifth, transportation.
Labor and materials, in other
words, are what are necessary to win
the war. What, then, is the duty of
all of us? Obviously what we must do
is to produce all that is possible and
consume as little as necessary and
give the government our utmost fi
nancial support.
If we follow this creed, we shall
leave for the government more labor
and materials for strictly war pur
poses and we shall accumulate sav
ings for investment in War Savings
Stamps. Thus we shall help both the
government and ourselves.
Possibly one reason why all the six
candidates for the senate don't en
gage in joint debate is because they
know the people can’t stand it without
wearing gas masks.

left at the depot, has been fitted on
the truck and the old fire reels will be
dispensed with in the future. The
city has some 1,400 feet of hose, and
another 500 feet has been ordered.
When all this equipment has been
secured the local fire department will
rank with the best volunteer fire or
