SMOKE-PRODUCING DEVICES
USED IN FIELD BY HUNS
To prevent enemy observation of
troop movements and other activities
of military importance, smoke screens
are being widely used in the fighting
along the western front. To produce
them the Germans are using three de
vices that are much alike in type but
different in size. They are known as
the smoke drum, the smoke box, and
the smoke top. The latter, which is
illustrated in the July Popular Me
chanics Magazine, is the favored ap
paratus, is cylindrical, about three
feet high, a trifle more than a foot
in diameter, and weighs about 150

THE JACKSON PROGRESS-ARGUS, JACKSON, GEORGIA, FRIPAY, JULYJ^tSIS
RED CROSS NOTES
Owing to the inadequate supply of
materials at headquarters, the non
absorbent cotton for the oakum pads
has not yet been received by the chap
ter, neither has the July allotment
arrived, consequently work at the
Red Cross rooms is discontinued un
til further notice is given. This will
be done as soon as supplies are ob
tained.
A splendid doation to the chapter
was the coop of chickens sent in by
Mis Avie Ingram, the sale of which
amounted to $7.55. The spirit and
value of such gifts are of great help
to the noble work and it is hoped
that the example so generously set
forth by Miss Ingram will be follow
ed by others throughout the county.
The Red Cross chicken coop is in
charge of Mr. Jack Currie at the Star
Store and any donations of chickens
from housewives throughout the
county will be most acceptable, even
the gift of one or two chicken will
buy several bandages and be of won
derful help to our oldier boys at the
front. This is an opportunity for ev
ery woman in the county to do her
own little bit. Even if she can’t
leave her household duties to do Red
Cross work she can contribute a
chicken or two, or maybe several and
thereby assist the great cause.
Collectors will be out next w'eek
for the July pledge to the Red Cross
and all contributors are asked to
have their pledges ready.

COUNTY SHOWS
WELL EDUCATION
Only Six Illiterate White
Children Here
MARKED IMPROVEMENT
EDUCATIONAL ADVANCEMENT
WIPING OUT ILLITERACY —
BUTTS WILL STAND NEAR TOP
—SCHOOLS DOING GOOD WORK
Butts county, under the new rating
of the school census, will stand near
the top of the counties in Georgia in
the standpoint of education. The re
cent census, which was completed sev
eral weeks ago, reveal sthe fact that
there are only 6 white children of
school age in the county who can
neither read nor write. The number
of colored children who can neitther
read nor write is 203.
This is a splendid showing and
proves that the county is making
marked strides along educational
lines. No rural county in the state
can make a better showing, and it is
certain that this county will rank
with the most p rogressive counties
in Georgia in matters of educational
advancement.
Illiteracy is fast disappearing under
progressive school methods. The
number of white children who are
illiterate shows the improvement in
education within the past few years.
In view of the fact that over half the
population of the county is colored
the showing is a remarkably good
one.
Efforts of the board of education,
whose members are composed of some
of the most influential and progres
sive citizens in the county, to give
the county better schools will be
warmly commended. Any steps the
board may take to wipe out illiteracy
and give every child an opportunity
to acquire the rudiments of an educa
tion will be backed up by the citizens
as a whole.
Butts county is to be congratulated
that illiteracy is on the run and the
good work must be kept up until
there is not an illiterate child or
grown up in the confines of the coun
ty.
MOTHER! 6IVE CHILD
“SYRUP OF FIBS" IF

If Cross, Feverish, Sick, Bil
ious, Clean Little Liver
and Bowels
Children love this “fruit laxa
tive,” and nothing else cleanses the
tender stomach, liver and bowels so
nicely.
A child simply will not stop play
ing to empty the bowels, and the re
sult is, they become tightly clogged
with waste, liver gets sluggish,
stomach sours, then your little one
don’t eat, sleep or act naturally,
breath is bad, system full of cold,
has sore throat, stomach-ache or
diarrhoea. Listen, Mother! See if
tongue is coated, then give a tea
spoonful of “California Syrup of
Figs,” and in a few hours all the
constipated waste, sour bile and un
digested food passes out of the sys
tem, and you have a well, playful
child again.
Millions of mothers give “Cali
perfectly harmless, children love
fornia Syrup of Figs” because it is
it, and it never fails to act on the
stomach, liver and bowels.
Ask your druggist for a
bottle of “California Syrup of
Figs,” which has full directions for
babies, children of all ages and for
grown-ups plainly printed on the
bottle. Beware of counterfeits sold
here. Get the genuine, made by
“California Fig Syrup Company.”

MARKET BUREAU ASKS
INCREASED SUPPORT
Good Work Being Done and Plans to
Extend System
Atlanta, Ga., July 4.—Upon the ba
sis of resolutions unanimously passed
by the biggest farmers meeting ever
held in Georgia just a few weeks ago,
the state department of agriculture
will ask the legislature at its present
sessio for an aggregate approportion
og $35,000 to meet the necessary ex
penses of the Georgia state bureau of
markets for the coming year.
Having seen, during its activities
what ca nbe accomplished in the mar
keting of food crops, farmers all over
Georgia are directly interested in the
extension of the service of this branch
of the department so that it will be in
a position to take good care of every
marketing problem presented to it.
iMany times the amount of money
asked from the legislature for this
service to Georgia farmers has been
saved them the past year by the work
of the marketing bureau. If its pos
sibilities are increased through an
adequate appropriation, unquestion
ably a far greater and more valuable
service can be rendered.
The department is asking the leg
islature to appropriate this money
from funds which are collected by it
as inspection fees on oils and ferti
lizers. Within the past twelve months
through these collections Commission
er J. J. Brown has turned into the
state treasury $51,000 more than was
paid in the year before; so that the
increase alone in the state’s income
through the department will more
than take care of the appropriation
asked for. It is hoped the legislature
will be sufficiently liberal with the
market bureau to enable it to give
Georgia farmers everywhere the good
service they will need the coming year

COAL FIRE UNDERMINES
VAST AREA IN OHIO
Probably the greatest fire in the
world is burning in southeastern Ohio,
says H. A. Mount in the July Popular
Mechanics Magazine. It haa been
burning for more than 30 years and
has been fed by more than 15,000,000
tons of the finest soft coal in the Unit
ed States. The fire has spread over
about 18 square miles of territory,
and has actually consumed about
1,500 acres of coal vein that in places
is 15 ft. in thickness, averaging 9%
ft. So fir the tire has defied every
effort to distignuish it and promises
to be still burning a hundred years
hence. The coal vein that is burning
is said by mining experts to be the
finest vein in the Hocking Valley dis
trict, and perhaps the finest soft-coal
vein i nthe United States. It has
been found impossible to smother
the fire, either by inclosing it or by
using chemicals. In one of the early
attemps to extinguish the fire, water
was pumped on it continuously for
three years without visible effect.
The fire was started simultaneously
i nseven big mines in the vein during
the strike disturbances which occur
red in 1884.
PREVENT HOG CHOLERA
The B. A. Thomas Hog Powder
has a record of 95 per cent cures of
Hog Cholera. If you feed your hogs
as directed, you need never fear hog
cholera nor any other hog disease.
And the directions are very simple,
just about what you are doing, plus
a few cents worth of B. A. Thomas’
Hog Powder in the feed twice a
week.
Usually, though, cholera gets in
before we know it. Then it requires
close attention to each hog—each
hog must be dosed—and if you will
dose them as directed, you will save
better than 90 per cent. If you
don't, the B. A. Thomas medicine
costs you nothing. We—not some
distant manufacturer pay your
money back.
