WOOD FOR GINS
BEING STRESSED
Want to Save Coal For
Domestic Use
HARDMAN ISSUES CARD
EACH COTTON GROWER REQUES
TED TO FURNISH WOOD FOR
GINNING COTTON—WILL SAVE
MUCH COAL
The state fuel administrator has
issued a statment requesting ginner
ies to use only wood for fuel the com
ing season in order to save all the
coal possible for domestic use.
Dr. Hardman’s letter is as follows:
1. Have customers supply wood
Fuel.
In view of the fact that the gove
ernment has already made some rul
ings which materially affect the coal
supply of ginneries, we most earnestly
recommend that each gin in this state
make an effort to secure a supply of
wood fuel, and that ginneries ask and
solicit each patron to furnish the gin
with sufficient wood to gin his own
crop.
2. This will utilize vsaste fuel.
This wood can be prepared by the
customers at times when they would
not otherwise be engaged, and, fur
thermore, it will conserve waste wood
which would otherwise not be used,
such as dead trees, fallen trees and
other waste timber which can be cut
into vwod timber. Gins could pay
prices for this wood sufficiently re
munerative to the producers.
3. Operate only at full speed.
We further recommend that each
ginnery operate only so many days
per week as may be absolutely neces
sary in order to handle its customers’
cotton, say four days per week in the
beginning. In this way they will put
in full days ginning, thereby conserv
ing both fuel and labor, as their labor
can be otherwise employed on days
when the gin is not in operation.
The scarcity of coal, or rather the
demand for coal for war purposes, is
increasing so enormously that conser
vation of fuel is absolutely necessary
in order to carry out the war program
and ginneries are asked to co-operate
by following the suggestions made
above, in so far as local conditions
will permit.

It was our good fortune to take a
trip to West Butts with Mr. A. M.
Watkins to see our friend, the Hon.
T. P. Bell, who had just got back
from the hospital after undergoing
a very severe operation. We vuent in
Mr. Watkins’ fine car, driven by his
daughter who is a very careful driver.
It rode as smooth as a Pullman on

Mr. Watkins has two fine farms in
