Imposing Memorial to Be Erected to
Big Georgia Planter
Over the grave of the late Hon.
James M. Smith, the big Georgia far
mer, at Smithhonia, Oglethorpe coun
ty, there will be erected a seven thou
sand dollar mausoleum, which with
its finishing3 and fencings will ap
proximate $9,860 in all. The contract
w as let last week for the erection of
this imposing memorial to the great
farmer.

vention AT COUNTY LINE
Two Day Session Will Be Held Aug.
30 and 31
The Butts County Musical Con
vention will be held this year at
County Line church Friday and Sat
urday, August 30 and 31. Some of
the best singers in the county will be
present and in addition it is planned
to have several prominent leaders
from out of the county in attendance
to help out with the singing. The
public in general is invited to attend.
The convention will be opened at
10 o’clock and there will be sessions
in the morning and afternoon and at
the noon hour dinner will be served
on the grounds.

CONGRESSMAN -WALTER WISE
VISITOR HERE DURING WEEK
Hon. J. Walter Wise, of Fayette
ville, was a visitor to Jackson Tues
day in the interest of his race for re
election to congress. Mr. Wise was
cordially greeted by his many friends
and supporters, and during his short
stay in the city he met and talked
with a large number of voters. He
will return to the county in a few
days for a more extended canvass.
Mr. Wise was given assurance of
continued support and his friends de
clare his race in this county is in
good shape.

Mr. Will Wachter of this county
had some hogs that were down with
cholera and had given up all hope of
saving them and would not spend one
penny on them. I gave him one 151 b
pail of your B. A. Thomas’ Hog Pow
der and he has just come in and paid
me for it and advises that every one
of his sick hogs got well and that he
had killed them and now has them in
his smoke house and that they were
as fine as any he had killed this year.
I want to add that he said his hogs
were down and so sick that he had to
prize their mouths open and his wife
poured the powder down their throats

Atlanta, Ga., Aug. 17.—The state
campaign staff in charge of the Y. M.
C. A. and Y. W. C. A. third war fund
drive has just been announced and is
as follows:
Malcolm Lockhart, state campaign
director.
James Morton, executive secretary
of rural work and assistant state
campaign director.
Joseph H. Reynolds, chairman
speakers committee, in charge of
speaking program of the campaign.
Charles D. Montgomery, executive
secretary of colored work.
George Y. Malone, executive secre
tary of boys work.
C. V. Steed, executive secretary of
students work.
Edward Young Clarke, state pub
licity director.
The above staff is to have exclu
sive charge of every phase of the
campaign, and from standpoint of
personnel is one of the strongest
campaign organizations in the
country.
The headquarters of the Georgia
campaign staff is located in the Y. M.
C. A. building on Luckie street in
Atlanta.
In the coming campaign, which
will be put on immediately at the
close of the next Liberty Bond cam
paign, the Y. M. C. A. is asking for a
fund of one hundred million dollars
for its own use, and twelve million
for the Y. W. C. A. work. It is hoped
that the total subscription will be
greatly in excess of the amount.
Georgia’s quota is a little over a mil
lion dollars and an effort will be
made by those in charge of the Geor
gia campaign to double the quota
during the dirve in Georgia this fall.

GRAND JURY FOREMAN
With Judge Wm. E. H. Searcy, Jr.,
of Griffin, presiding the August term
of Butts county superior court was
convened in Jackson Monday morning
at 9 o’clock. Following his usual able
charge, in which Judge Searcy stres
sed law enforcement and loyalty and
patriotism to the country in these
perilous war times, the grand jury
organized by selecting Mr. J. H.
Millsj as foreman and Mr. R. E.
Evans as clerk.
The consideration of civil business
was at once taken up and several mat
ters were disposed of Monday. A set
tlement v*as reached in four or five of
the damage suits against the Central
Georgia Power Cos. These suits have
been hanging fire for several years.
Gradually, they are being settled.
Several criminal matters, including
three murder cases, will be called
for a hearing during the week. The
second half of the week will be given
over entirely to criminal cases.
It is likely that court will be in
session during the greater part of the
week.
