CARNIVAL PEOPLE ARE
ARRESTED AT RALEIGH
Work or Fight Law Gets Show People
Into Trouble
Raleigh, N. C.—Ten soldiers and
15 policemen raiding the Dyer and
Brown carnival picked up 300 show
men and spectators, who at midnight
are making frantic efforts to find their
registration cards. This unexpected
explosion in the joy perambulators
not only caught 50 or more of the
men who were risking one optic on the
hoochy koochy and making love to the
snake charmer. This lady drew the
prize embarrassment when all in sight
had been taken someone suggested
that the snake artist might be subject
to draft.
A cursory examination followed
and behold the lady was a man. She
still is. In the round up many Bal
eigh boys and country visitors were
taken. Four of these great covered
wagon trucks hauled the fellows in.
They were driven to the federal court
where those with cards or proof of
their registration were released. The
soldiers sat in the windows and guard
ed the boys through the night. The
carnival fellows were utterly defense
less, the government had been on
their trail and officers from Columbia
were said to have v<orked up the case.
Business suspended while the ex
citing hours went by . It was 10
o’clock when the officers came in with
arrests that looked like the German
losses in prsoners for about three
days.

SERGEANT HODGES SAYS
GERMANS CHAINED 10 GUNS
Daring feats of valor accomplished
by American arms, how the Huns
were swept back by the charge of the
United States soldiers, of finding
Germans chained to their guns—these
are interesting features of a letter
from Sergeant Paul Hodges, Cos. C
38th Infantry, A. E. F., to his father,
Mr. J. J. Hodges. The letter is as fol
lows:
July 30, 1918.
Dear Father: Just a few lines to
let you know that I am well and hope
these few lines will find you the same.
I am thankful to God that he has spar
ed my life hrough the past few weeks,
for I have been through a terrible
struggle, one that I can never forget.
On the night of the 14t,h past, as you
will remember it v*as Sunday night
and the French national holiday,
about 12 o’clock the Germans.- sent
over one of the biggest barrages that
was ever known to be put down by the
dirty Huns. It lasted for twelve hours
and I was out in it till it ended. We
came out of our dug-outs under shell I
fire, took up our position for the'
Germans were coming and we had to
hold them back.
About 3 o’clock they came across
the river Marne under a cloud of
smoke and our machine guns mowed
them down as fast as they advanced.
For six days and nights the battle
still raged and there were German
dead on top of dead. But thanks to
God on the 22nd we drove them back
over the river and went over after
them, capturing and killing all that
•vuere in the way. We captured two
guns and several prisoners, also lots
of machine guns and other imple
ments of war. Some Germans were
chained to their guns and believe me,
when you get the ups on them they
will holler “kamerad,” and throw up
their hands.
Of course we lost some men, but
they could not have died for a better
cause—the cause that we are all
fighting for, and that is Freedom and
Old Glory that she may forever wave.
I am proud to say that our regi
mental flag has been decorated by
the French and American govern
ments and each man of the regiment
receives a card of honor. Do you
think we are doing our bit?
I received my dear children’s pic
tures today and they looked so sweet
and I am trusting in God day by day
that I may be able to see their smil
ing faces once more. Now as it is
getting late I will close by saying if
we never meet any more on this earth
I hope to meet you in heaven.
From your loving son,
SERGEANT PAUL HODGES.
FEED OUT YOUR HOGS SIX
WEEKS EARLIER
In every lot of hogs on feed two or
three weeks quickly and actually eat
less than others. If all would fatten
like these, the entire drove would be
ready for the market six weeks
earlier and to save six weeks feed is
an item that you fully understand.
The hog that fattens easily must be
in prime physical condition. The B.
A Thomas’ Hog Powder is a condi
tioner for hogs. It keeps their system
clean and healthy and enables them
to fatten quickly without falling prey
to the usual diseases of hogs. The B.
A. Thomas’ Hog Powder is not stock
food. It’s straight medicine and we
took the agency because it enables
you to feed out your hogs much ear
lier.

INDIGESTION
LOSS OFAPPETITE
And Similar Troubles Helped by Ziron Iron
Tonic, Says Alabamian.
"I got a bottle of Ziron”, write*
Marshall Rliordes, of Eufaula, Ala.,
“and took it for indigestion, nervous
ness, loss of appetite and similar trou
bles. It helped me very much. My
mother-in-law suffered with the same
troubles, so I gave her a dose or two
of Ziron, and she says It helped her
greatly. I will always keep a bottle
of Ziron in the house and will speak
a good word for It whenever I hav*
the opportunity.”
Ziron Is anew combination of Iron,
with the hypophosphites of lime and
soda, and other valuable tonic ingre
dients, which have been found to
build up the enemlc, weak, worn-out
system. Ziron puts Iron Into your
blood when you need it. If you are
pale, weak, nervous, depressed, have no
appetite, It is probably a sign that your
blood needs Iron. Take Ziron.
Your druggist sells it, on a guaran
tee. See him about it.
