A few cases of Spanish influenza
have been reported in Butts county,
though so far as known there has been
no deaths from the disease. The
schools are suffering more or less on
account of the new malady.
Up to the present no steps have
been taken to guard against a spread
of the disease locally and whether the
schools will be orderd closed will de
pend upon the turn of events for the

Cincinnati Man Discovers
Drug That Loosens Corns
So They Lift Out
Good news spreads rapidly and
druggists here are kept busy dispen
sing freezone, the recent discovery of
a Cincinnati man, which is said to
loosen any corn so it lifts out with
the fingers.
A quarter of an ounce costs very
little at any store which handles
drugs, but this is said to be sufficient
to rid one’s feet of every hard or
soft c om or callus.
You apply just a few drops on the
tender, aching com or toughened cal
lus and instantly the soreness is re
lieved, and soon the com or callus is
so shriveled that it lifts out without
pain. It is a sticky substances which
dries when applied and never inflam
es or irritates the surrounding skin.
This discovery will prevent thous
ands of deaths annually from lock
jaw and infection heretofore result
ing from the suicidal habit of cutting
corns.

HOME CROWN WHEAT
BEST FOR PLANTING
Different Varieties Are Recom
mended For North Georgia
And South Georgiy
The experience of Georgia farmers
with {irheat shows that in the major
ity of cases home grown seed gives
the best returns. The Food Adminis
tration has asked us to plant a larger
acreage than ever this year to wheat
and now is the time to make provision
for seed. Now, some varieties do
much better in one section of the
state than others.
The Georgia Red or Blue Stem,
and it seems that these two names
are applied to the same wheat, ap
pears to be better adapted to the
southern part of the state, and is one
of the best varieties that can be grown
in that section. The Red May prob
ably comes second for south Geor
gia conditions, everything considered.
This wheat is very much like the Geor
gia Red in many respects, but is a little
later in maturing* which is a disad
vantage. Leap’s Prolific, another
smooth wheat, seems to be pretty well
adapted to the northern part of the
state, but does not show so much prom
ise in the Coastal Plain region. Varie
ties that are well adapted to all parts
of the state are Australian Red, Mam
moth Red and Fulcaster.
A selected strain of Fulcaster made
a yield of 62% bushels per acre at the
College during the past year. This is
the largest yield recorded during the
past ten years.
Dietz Mediterranean for a number
i of years has been one of the highest
yielding wheats that has been grown
in the northern part of the state. The
objection to this wheat is that it has
a soft straw and very often lodges as
it did at the College this year. In
1917 all wheat was short strawed, and
there was no lodging, but with a fa
vorable growing season during the
spring like 1918, it made a very large
growth of straw' and about one-third of
the area went down. This makes har
vesting quite difficult, and reduces
yield; for this reason Dietz Mediter
ranean is not recommended for land
in a very high state of cultivation.
Whatever variety is selected, it
should be seen to that the wheat has
been well cared for and treated for
weevil with carbon bisulphide immedi
ately after threshing. Ordinarily, pre
caution should be taken to see that
it is well dried, hut with weather con
dition prevailing as they have during
the past threshing season, there is
very little danger of any wheat not
being in good enough condition to keep
perfectly Wheat that is heated is not
fit for seed, and an effort should be
made to ascertain if the wheat has
bq,en handled properly before buying
it for seed. —Prof. John R. Fain, Col
lege of Agriculture.
