PLANNING THE NEW
YEAR’S WORK
It is time to take stock, and as
well it is time to lay down a plat
form for the year’s work. We are
quoting below Dr. Seaman A.
Knapp’s Ten Commandments of
agriculture. He gave these ten
commandments cf agriculture to
farmers and Extension Workers
many years ago. They are just as
sound today, however, as they were
when fresh froom his pen. Read
them carefully and see how many
you carried out in 1922. They are
good enough for the planks in
your 1923 platform:
1. “Prepare a deep and thor
oughly pulverized seed bed, well
drained; break in the fall to a

SIMPLE REMEDY 10 PREVENT
THE FLU 6IVEN RY DOCTOR
Following publication recently of
a statement from Dr. J. I*. Kenne
dy, Atlanta health officer, in which
he enumerated a number of pre
ventative measures to guard against
influenza. The Constitution Sunday
received a communication from a
prominent' Atlanta physician, who
requested that his name be withheld,
commending Dr. Kennedy’s advice
and adding other precautionary
methods against the disease.
The letter follows:
Commending the excellent advice
given by the city health officer re
garding influenza now prevailing, I
would also call attention to the fol
lowing simple and inexpensive pre
vention treatmeijJ. which was advo
cated by the U. S. public health
service during the influenza epidem
ic of 1918, with marked benefit:
Disfolve one-fourth of a teaspoon
ful each of table salt and bicarbo
nate of soda in a half teacup of
viurm water, this solution to be
used as a nasal douche and throat
wash.
Can be used with a glass douche
or placed ih the palm of the hand
and snuffed up through the nostrils
back to the throat and expelled
through the mouth; the throat also
to be gargled with same solution,
three or four handsful rhou’d; be
used each time, and dose at laest
twice a day.
The effect of this treatment is
to soften the secretions causing
them to be easily expelled and at
the same time carrying with it the
bacteria that have lodged in the
cavities through inspiration.
This treatment, which by the
way is a splendid sanitary proce
dure, will tend to prevent any of
the catarrhal effections so Common
in the winter season, and should be
used by every member of the fam
ily during an epidemic and occa
sionally at other times.
