FIRE LOSSES IN
1922410 MILLION
EXCEPT YEAR OF THE SAN
FRANCISCO DISASTER 1922
WITNESSED LARGEST LOSSES
EVER RECORDED
The fire loss record of the year
1922 stands in the history of this
continent as the worst of all time,
with the one exception, 1906, the
San Francisco conflagration year.
The estimated value of the property
in the United States and Canada
destroyed by fire during 1922, as
compiled from the daily records of
the “Journal of Commerce,’’ aggre
gate $410,889,350. This is an in
crease of some $78,000,000, or 23
per cent over the abnormally bad
figures of the previous year.
There were no general conflagra
tions in large cities during the year
to excuse the immense fire waste,
but, on the other hand, pronounced
waves of heavy losses in centers or
classes of business in which,
through the readjustment trade
conditions were acute, have produc
ed existence of bad moral hazard.
It will be noted that wherever ft
nancial and trade conditions became
particularly strained the losses al
most immediately became more ex-
cessive.
The monthly table of fire losses
for the year 1922 is as follows:
January $38,663,000
February 29,304,300
March 39,910,750
April 31,009,750
May 29,868,950
June 24,102,850
July 36,667,750
August 21,579,500
September 41,515,000
October 30,776,100
November 30,776,100
December 47,426,000
The total fire losses of the three
years of the readjustment period
period are $1,074,399,925, or an an
nual average of $358,133,308. That
this enormous waste has been large
ly contributed to by carelessness
and arson is beyond question. The
loss experience of the fire insurance
companies analyzed by the National
Board of Fire Underwriters as to
causes of fires shows that about 64
per cent of the fires are from pre
ventable causes. During the past
forty-four years the aggregate fire
waste of the United States and
Canada, as compiled from the daily
records, of the “Journal of Com
merce,” reached the enormous total
of $8,100,363,745.
Approximately 16 per cent of our
lumber goes into crates and boxes,
according to the Forrest Service,
United States Department of Agri
culture. The failure of containers
in shipment results, in enormous an
nual loss. New and valuable infor
mation on the causes of weakness
and how the requisite strength can
be secured with more economical
use of material has been recently
obtained by the Forest Products
Laboratory, Madison, Wis.
RENEWED TESTIMONY
No one in Jackson who suffers
backache, headaches, or distressing
urinary ills can afford to ignore this
Jackson woman’s twice-told story. It
is confirmed testimony that no Jack
son resident can doubt.
Mrs. J. R. Thurston, Brookwood
St., says: “I strained my back while
housecleaning and my kidneys be
came weak and I suffered so I
couldn’t rest comfortably and was
so sore I couldn’t stoop. My kid
neys felt as if they were swollen
and they acted irregularly. A friend
recommended Doan’s Kidney Pills
so I got a supply at the Slaton Drug
Cos. Doan’s relieved all the pains in
my back and also all the other symp
toms of the trouble.”
THREE YERAS LATER? Mrs.
Thurston siad: The cure Doan’s
Kidney Pills gave me has been last
ing and lam glad to again say a
good word for Doan’s.”

If you never put your foot upon the first round of a

Deciding to start is easy; actually starting Is more dif

you progress, for success begets confidence, and confidence

Let your first bank deposit be ever so small, having
started you will desire to make each succeeding deposit a
