PRESENT COUNCIL TO
SERVE ANOTHER YEAR
MAYOR O. A. POUND AND BOARD
OF ALDERMEN TO STAND FOR
RE-ELECTION. VOTE NEXT
WEDNESDAY
According’ to announcement made
Wednesday morning by Mayor O* A.
Pound, the present mayor and coun
cil will stand for reelection in the
primary of December 29. It is not
believed there will be any opposition.
The present administration has
served the town well. During the
year paving bonds were voted and
it is hoped to work out a plan by
which the husiness district can be
paved. This, it is believed, can be
clone within the next few weeks,
depending on the support and co
operation ertended by the county
and state highway department.
Mayor Pound and his board of
aldermen have given general satis
faction to the people of the com
munity. A White Way was installed
in the early fall. Other progressive
measures are planned. The business
affairs have been handled in an
economical manner.
Friends of the present officers will
be glad of an opportunity to give
them a vote of confidence by elect
ing them to serve for another twelve
months.
HOGS KEPT HIM FROM GOING
BROKE
A. H. Oliver of Mount Olive, N. C.
is a young middle-aged farmer with
a keen mind and when a fact about
better farming is presented to him
in the right way, he searches through
it carefully and if it is worth his
attention, he gives it a triaL
He did this with hogs. For over
four years, Mr. Olivet and W. Yv
Shay, swine extension specialist at
State College have been writing to
each other and paying one another
occasional visits.. Mr. Oliver became
interested in the breeding and feed
ing of swine according to the de
monstrated methods and decided to
give it a trial. On November 6, he
wrote to Mr. Shay saying, “I have
marketed two carloads of hogs this
year and Sow have 106 pigs just
weaning. I xihall begin breeding my
sows next vvYek. My hog sale for the
year, to date, have been about $3,-
800. I am jus* turning my pigs on the
soy bean field* with access to shelled
corn, meal, middlings, fish meal and
minerals, if tlis course is unwise,
please write lrl at once.”
Mr. Oliver A ted further that he
plans to have Be on new land with
which to fatten Vis pigs in the spring.
The rye will then be plowed under
and the land planted to corn for
hogging down in the fall.
“I have made over 1,400 barrels
of potatoes and over 100 bales of
cotton this year,” he says, “but hogs
have kept me from going broke.”
Mr. Shay disagrees with his cor
respondent when he says that hogs
kept him from going broke. It was
the combination of hogs and the
knowledge of how make them
profitable that kept Mr. Oliver on a
cash basis this year. The 106 young
mortgage lifters are being handled
so as to be ready for finishing next
year at. the least possible cost and
with the greatest gains.—Southern
Cultivator and Farming.
