affected by a decline in the cotton

when the market declines business'
slumps. We are all dominated too

THE money which telephone subscribers and the
public in Georgia pay for telephone service is a
large sum in the aggregate but it by no means equals
tl>e money spent in the state by the telephone company.
Last year, for instance, the telephone company spent more
money for taxes, wages and similar operating expenses,
and for additions to the plant in Georgia than ir
collected for telephone service.
If the telephone company had depended solely on its
operating revenue it could not have improved and en
larged the telephone system to the extent of $2,270,000.
Our ability to borrow money to make these additions and
replacements is due to the confidence of investors in the
management, and their belief that you are willing to pay
rates tor service which will earn a reasonable return on
the investment. ,
The cost of everything used in rendering telephone service
has increased enormously, but the rates have advanced so
slightly that your telephone dollar now buys more than any
other dollar you spend. .
The margin between revenue and expense is rapidly
dwindling and the increased costs of furnishing telephone
service presents a problem in which every telephone user
has a vital interest.
