RABUN COUNTY IS FREE
BOVINE TUBERCULOSIS
Rabun County, Georgia, has just
been officially declared free of bo
vine tuberculosis, according to Dr.
J. M. Sutton, state veterinarian.
This is the first county in the state
to be freed of the disease and indi
cates the progress being made along
this line.
The last legislature appropriated
$12,500 annually to be devoted to
freeing the state from bovine tuber
culosis. and this amount supplement
ed by funds from the federal gov
ernment, is putting the work upon
an effective basis in Georgia. Over
2,000 head of cattle in Walker
County have been tuberculin tested,
and only six reactors were found.
These were removed and killed, the
owners receiving suitable compensa
tion fo rtheir loss. This county is
expected to be added to the official
‘‘free list” shortly.'

BANANA FORMERLY KNOWN
AS FRUIT OF PARADISE
"Early inhabitants of the East
believed that the banana plant was
the source of good and evil and
that the serpent which tempted Eve
hid in a bunch of the fruit,” writes ]
W. T. Pope of the H await Experi

Deranment of Agriculture. “Un
doubtedly this legend influenced the
early classifiers who designated two
species of the plant as Musa para
disiaca (Fruit of Paradise) and
Musa Sapientum 1 Fruit of Knowl-J

ra.” was adopted from the language
of an African Congo tribe, and
first came into use during the six

“banana” seems to have been borne
for a long period by the fruit,
which was eaten raw. The term
“plantain” was given to a variety
which, though closely related to the
banana, is edible oniy after being
cooked. The generic name “Musa”
for the banana group was bestowed
by -the botanist Linnaeus in honor
of Antonias Musa, a learned phy
sician of the early Roman Empire.
